I just rewatched the first half. And really, I wasn't too disappointed in our defense.
I thought they played pretty well considering the circumstances. I was disappointed in our lack of a pass rush, but there were several times where we rushed Warner into poor throws.
Keep in mind that Warner was 6 of 8 for 35 yards after the first quarter. That's when most of our first-stringers were playing. Four yards an attempt is not that good.
Now, he did get hot on the TD drive, but think about the plays that were made. First, 20 yard pass to LF on Newman. This was the best pass play of the night for Warner. Newman was beat and LF ran a good route. Then, a long pass to the TE that Roy clobbered. On this play, the TE made a great catch, 9 times out of 10, the TE is separated from the ball. Lastly, the TD. On this play, we pressured Warner into a very poor throw. Davis and our other defenders were in position to stop the pass had it been good. But the poor throw gave only LF a chance, and boy did he take it. Fluke play....just like the "immaculate reception".
Now, these aren't excuses. But those throws totalled around 70 yards. On the surface it appears that Warner was "lighting us up", but in reality, he completed a ton of short dump offs, and was very fortunate on two of the longer ones. In other words, the likelyhood that he would've duplicated his numbers in the second half against our first-stringers is minimal.
We stuffed the run (my biggest concern), and played decently against the pass.
I think once BP loosens the reins on the youngin's, then I think we'll see a more agressive d.
We played a pretty basic defense last night......
