Defense vs. Misdirection?

Last year opposing offenses really torched the Cowboys with misdirection plays. I was hoping to see signs during the preseason that this particular issue was addressed but the only play I can recall was a PA rollout where Gregory bit on the run.

I really hope things are different but I have to see guys actually make plays in general and specifically in this area.

Last year they had to think a lot and not react in time, in a very poor scheme. There was a lot of confusion. Injuries as well. And no PS games and limited off season work and TC.
This year from limited play, that confusion seems to be gone for the most part. I am sure there is some, mostly from the rookies as usual.
However, teams won't show any misdirection plays as not to tip their playbook. So that will be something to keep an eye on.

i really thought we were already having major issues with misdirection plays, - even before last year's Nolan's utter disaster unit.

We were already struggling vs RBs and TE screens left and right ,..and even teams like Carolina when Cam Newton played us, could easily run RPO's on us left and right, and
a handful of those 273 rushing yards vs Rams were due to jet sweep end arounds that spun our heads around like nuts.

How much had to do with DL and LBs that either could not read and diagnose plays quickly enough to react against them, or could not get off blocks.

And do not be surprised if opposing teams use both misdirection plays and Hurry up- No huddle offenses in attempts to confuse and exhaust vs Parson & Co, but also to
slow and limit any quick substitution packages that Quinn seemingly likes to employ during a drive.

Hoping Parsons speed to the ball will help with that issue

Good coaching by opponents will take advantage of his speed n instinct n eagerness...at least early on. He'll give up a few big plays. The melt down here will be epic.

Good news is he will learn. Still looking forward to his enthusiasm on the field. Wishing Mr Parsons good luck as I do all players.

Go Cowboys!

yeah I didn't mention that but I've brought that up before: IMO Jaylon and LVE were exposed by the Rams and eventually teams caught on. I am hoping (at least on LVE's part) that I'm wrong and last year is more about the cword number and Nolan.

Given it's much more of a one gap scheme, misdirection won't present the same challenges it did in 2020

This starts with discipline at the ends. Watch for Lawrence to chase the RB inside. I am not sure what the Cowboys defensive coaches are teaching them but everyone breaking for the fake is someone's mistake. They need to watch films of Demarcus Ware. He was a master at playing his position with discipline.

These guys have to stay at home and do there jobs.
Amen. When you play bad undisciplined defense, a good offensive coordinator will run misdirection to exploit it. I would take 11 average guys doing their job over 2 or 3 "elites" free lancing and playing out of position...

for any defense to have success it starts with discipline. Guys must know their responsibility at all time and do not just chase the ball and run themselves out of the play.

right so offenses run misdirection, motion, and many bunch type formations because it only fools dallas? lmao

NO, its the new nfl the more movement even the way they drag wrs across and underneath coverages and it almost always works but not many OCs have the patience to stay with it all game or long droves creates more opportunity for TOs..

its staple of offenses now and most defenses struggle with it..last year sure but can we stop using last seasons team to make judgment at all..jeez

The problem was not specific to misdirection. "Direction" was the problem.

Offenses just ran to the side of the field (inside or outside runs) where Jaylon was located.

The 4-2-5 DEs or 3-4 OLBs started trying to compensate for having to play with 10 men on the field + Jaylon by cheating inside/outside based on guessing and it resulted in big plays.

the DEs didn’t contain at all. They just crashed down the line.

Marinelli used to tell them that all the time. When they stay put and shed their blocks they are in position. But they get confused sometimes because they want to be around the ball or swarm because that was Marinelli style. Didn’t work well all the time.
