What this statement really means is that if your D sucks, no matter how good your O is you are unlikely to win it all. Even Brady has never won w/o at least a decent D.

And no, that doesn't mean a D is all you need. Balance, baby. Almost impossible to win it all w/o being at least decent on both sides of the ball.

NE drove down the field in OT like KC's D looked like it consisted of traffic cones.

tom brady has heard all that stuff about the pats being done he has mentioned it in his press conferences the rams are next on the list to be bounced

The Rams will need the defense to limit Brady. I believe Wadely is going to go exotic on blitzes...

KSK , need to have a defense to at least be able to keep you in the game. That's one reason the Rams are playing in this game and not us. Their D is not spectacular but it's good enough to shut down Zeke and minimize any other offense we had.

I think the original meaning of the axiom is that a team with a dominant defense usually wins championships....but I agree, it could also mean a team with a bad defense loses.

well brady won against atlanta without a good defense, and he doesnt have a great defense this year, it is all about
adjustments game plans schemes taking something away etc.

Same for brady on offense, they wanted to come out strong get a lead running the ball and they did that.
as a result they only had to score 17 in 2nd half to win the game.

I think NE is the underdog, but I will be rooting for them I think.

NE's D was 8th in the NFL in Yards allowed and 1st in Points allowed the year they won the super bowl.

Might want to fact check before you post.

Teams win championships... even though the Cowboys are the only team to not allow a single touchdown in the Super Bowl the words defense, offense or special teams are not engraved on the trophy.

Yeah but atlanta put 28 points on that defense, Tom just had to outscore them with 34 points.
I think that is the most points NE has scored in a SB and they barely won.

Yep

Need to be great on at least one side of the ball and average to above average on the other side.

LA and NE were 19th and 21st in defense . 2nd and 5th in offense.

Cowboys were 7th in defense , 22nd offense.

Great offenses were definitely the story this year on the most part.

The defense also had to stop Atlanta from scoring at all the second half, to allow the chance for a comeback. And they also came up with a turnover at a time they absolutely needed one.

Of course.

When you get to the playoffs, you are facing better competition, and more points are going to be scored. That actually makes D even more important.

Seriously, did you watch that super bowl? NE's D got after ATL toward the end and completely shut them down. You don't remember that?

The idea that D isn't important any more is simply incorrect. You must have D to win it all.

My understanding is slightly different, but not by much. It's that dominant defenses will beat a dominant offense. Even record breaking offenses.

But yeah, really bad defenses won't win either. A good example are the late 70s, early 80s Chargers. One of the best offenses out there. They came close a few times but never went to the SB with those Fouts teams.

Also DEN in the 80's, MIA w/ Marino, and even GB w/ Rodgers, aside from their one season where the D was 5th.

Defense does win championships......unless your QB is Tom Brady.
Do you remember that 1989 49ers team? That defense was great. Imho the greatest combination of offense and defense. That team had hall of fame talent on both sides of the ball. To me that team is the template for success in the 21st century.
