In no way does the observations proffered below impugn my opinion that the Cowboys have serious work to do on defense this year. However, looking down the stat sheet after yesterday presents a chilling reminder of just how many teeth the NFL has extracted from defenses in modern football. So I present for your perusal the following, starting with the vaunted Manning led Broncos:
Denver [4-0] yds against: 450
New England [4-0] yds against: 457
Seattle [4-0] yds against: 476
Kansas City [4-0] yds against: 298
Houston [2-2] yds against: 270
Atlanta [1-3] yds against: 448
Philadelphia [1-3] yds against: 472
Detroit [3-1] yds against: 417
Dallas [2-2] yds against: 506
Just a smattering of the best and worst on Sunday. The other two undefeateds go at it tonight but the loser will surely give up over 400 yds, especially with a potent Saints offense. Moreover, it would not be a stretch to imagine that had KC played a more potent offense than the hapless Giants, they too would have been north of 400 yds as well. And yes Dallas looks to have given up the most, unless Miami gets throttled monday night!
The sobering takeaway from this? The Dallas offense will need to consistently perform well above 400 yds with the present defense or this season is likely doomed. It seems that as the front four goes, this team will go and some Sundays will end up like what we saw in San Diego. Road games where they crap the bed will likely end in similar fashion.
