I'm of the opinion we get the best guy we can. Let me throw something out there to get smacked around.

Are we that far from running a 4-3?

Ware, Ratliff, resign Bowen or Spears, Spencer

Brent could challenge for the tackle spot. Depth at DE would be bad, but it's going to be bad anyway. You'd hope Lee could move outside and have an open competition for the other spot. can James play the middle in a 3-4?

I know it's some change, ok alot of change but I really like the thought of Ratliff in some one on one's with a guard, and we've got so many holes on the Dline now it might be time to think about it.

I guess I just don't want is to look only for a 3-4 guy

This is going to be the most important decision JG makes if he is hired as a HC.

People want to compare JG to Sean Payton. Big part of Payton's success in NO is because of his DC, Greg Williams. I think Payton can be/is aggressive in the way he manages the game is because he know he can trust this defense to make a stop or get a turnover.

I don't think there's a problem with the 3-4 in itself. I'm still looking for reasons from 4-3 proponents as to why the 4-3 would be clearly better than the 3-4.

We were pretty average to below average using the 4-3 from 2000-2002. Had a very good 2003 campaign, although we couldn't get to the passer. '04 was awful. And I mean AWFUL. In fact, I believe '04 was worse than this year because the strength of schedule was much more difficult this season. '05 was solid in the 3-4. '06 started out well, then collapsed (thanks, Zimmer). '07 was pretty good. '08 started out bad and then got quite good. '09 was excellent. This year was awful.

I'd say '09 was much better than '03. Of course, you'll get people saying that the talent in '09 was better than '03, but I think that's one of the nice features of the 3-4, it's easier to find front seven talent.

Personally, I think Ware is much better from the 2 point stance than with his hand in the dirt. I think it's not even close for Spencer (who played quite well once Garrett became the HC and was really good on '09, so the talent is there). But we simply don't have the personnel at LB in the 4-3, outside of Lee and Brooking, who might retire soon or get cut because of his age.

Sooo...we are putting Ware in a position to be less productive, the same with Spencer, who may not fit in as a 4-3 DE whatsoever, and then we are missing two more LB spots, all so we can hopefully improve Ratliff's play and I'm not convince the other DT beside him will be all that much better.

Plus, I wonder if Ratliff's elbow surgery played a role in his decline this year and if he goes back to his old self next season.

Personally, I'd rather stick with most of the personnel we have now in the front seven. Find a capable NT and switch Ratliff to DE if he still has struggles playing the NT spot. Give Spencer competition at camp from Butler. Finding a WILL ILB to replace brooking and play in the nickel. And for the sake of my sanity, replace Alan Ball at FS.

He comes from the george siefert coaching tree so he knows the 34.

I dont think he is high on anyones list however. Outside of his time as the panthers DC he has never been very good. his seattle defenses were not very good.

all his ties are to those west coast 49ers-packers guys and I cant imagine he is on anyones radar here.

Any defensive scheme is ONLY as good as ther players that run it. Dumb players equals schemes not being run CORRECTLY (see Dallas Cowboys 2010). You might think I'm crazy for saying this, but, for what he had to work with, Pasqualoni did a pretty good job. His problem was simple - wrong personnel. Think about it - turnovers SKYROCKETED once he started calling the D. Now, imagine him with a 350lb fat boy at NT, Rat at his NATURAL position of 3-4 DE, Lee as the starter at WILB, Spencer actually playing to his potential, and 2 average to above average (not superstars, but competent & SMART) safeties - this defense could easily go back to giving up only 18-20 pts/game vs the almost 4 TD's (27.3) it gave up this year.
