A while back I purchased a Cowboys DVD: 10 Greatest Games. It includes the five super bowl victories and five other big games over the years. I was born in the early seventies so my earliest Cowboy memories begin towards the end of the Staubach era.

I got the chance to watch the Cowboys victory over the Dolphins in Super Bowl VI on this DVD for the first time. I also have looked at some of the 90's games again, which I remember well.

It is interesting to compare the very good defenses we have had over the years, including our defense now since we have gone back to the 4-3. The Super Bowl VI defense featured

1. a very active front four (including Bob Lilly and Jethro Pugh).
2. Quick attacking linebackers like Chuck Howley. What a great player in coverage. He could have played in any era.
3. Some tough physical players in the secondary (like Cliff Harris)

Super Bowl VI for those of us too young to watch it was a really great defensive performance. We held the great Dolphins team, which could run or pass, to under 200 yards total offense. And we also got turnovers.

I see those same things in the 90s teams. First a very active front four, with unheard of depth of course, including Haley, Lett, Maryland, Tolbert. Quick linebackers who can run sideline to sideline. And a solid opportunistic secondary that is not afraid to lay the wood (like Woodson)

I see some of the same things with this team now that we have gone to the 4-3, although some of it is admittedly potential. Notwithstanding our current injuries, we have a nice active front four, with Ware being a dominant pass rusher. Quick, dynamic linebackers like Lee and Carter. And some physicality and hopefully opportunism in the secondary with Church, Carr and Claiborne.

Let's hope this defense can come close to playing like those prior ones.

In the 90s

If our defense comes close to the 70s or 90s teams we'll be going very deep into the playoffs. Very deep. Alas, we have the injuries and I'm not sure the talent level is there, but we can hope.
