So what will the Defensive End depth chart look like at the end of training camp?

We have a lot of talent at DE but even more question marks. There are six Defensive Ends on the roster who are likely to make the team but where they end up on the depth chart is wide open right now.

Right now (IMO) the Depth Chart is something like this –

RDE – DeMarcus Lawrence, Demontrae Moore, Benson Mayawa, Charles Tapper

LDE – Tyrone Crawford, Taco Carlton

My take on the DE’s is this –

DeMarcus Lawrence – should be the starter at RDE if he is healthy. But is he healthy? I can also see him moving to start at LDE if one of the other RDE emerges and takes the starting spot at RDE.

Damontre Moore – apparently showed a lot in mini camp, can play at the level of a starter or high quality backup if he is head is on straight (for once).

Mayowa – quality backup, I don’t see him starting

Charles Tapper – huge question mark, could end up anywhere on the depth chart from starter to third string. Looked like a prototype LDE in college but has lost weight and is playing at RDE now. Likely plays both spots.

Tyrone Crawford – Another member of the DLaw Club, a solid starter if healthy – but who knows if that is the case. I thought they would move him to 3T and push David Irving to start at LDE but the suspension threw that out. I can see him be an above average starter at LDE or a backup at 3T – or anything in between.

Taco Carlton – love the upside, no clue about where he takes most of his snaps. The team clearly wants him to start at RDE but my guess is that he plays both positions and (assuming everyone is healthy) takes most of his snaps as the backup LDE.

So my guess is the final depth chart looks like this:

RDE – DLaw, Damontre Moore, Mayowa

LDE – Tyrone Crawford, Taco Carlton, Charles Tapper

So what do you guys think the regular season depth chart looks like?

I see us going with the veterans early until the rookies show they can play. We actually have enough veterans to carve out a roster even without the rookies. Expect the veterans to be given the benefit of the doubt until the rookies can prove otherwise.

Veteran DEs - Lawrence, Crawford, Moore, Mayowa
Young DEs - Taco, Tapper, Irving (borderline veteran I suppose)

Veteran LBs - Lee, Hitchens, Wilson, Durant, Wilber
Young LBs - Smith, Nacho

Veteran DBs - Carroll, Scandrick, Jones, Heath, Blanton, Brown (young but proven)
Young DBs - Awuzie, Lewis, Woods, White, Frazier

My initial depth chart: Push the young guys to the end of the depth chart and watch them slowly creep up as the season progresses.

Something else to watch while the season progresses, Moore, Tapper, Mayowa and Taco are all backups with pass rush ability, Marinelli will be able to mix and match the rotation against each opponents to get the best matchups.

This.

Moore, Tapper and Taco may push to start at some point during the season (as Collins did last year when healthy) but vets will probably open the season at right and left DE.

Expanding on my previous post, I could see the initial depth chart looking something like this (young guys pushed to the end):

RDE - Lawrence, Moore, Mayowa, Tapper
3DT - Collins
1DT - Thornton, Paea
LDE - Crawford, Irving, Taco

Note: Crawford/Irving will probably backup Collins at 3DT in the base, with the line looking a bit different in nickel/dime, until Irving or Taco can beat Crawford out so he can slide back inside permanently.

SLB - Wilson (unless suspension), Durant, Wilber
MLB - Hitchens, Smith
WLB - Lee, Nacho

Note: We'll mostly only have two LBers on the field. It'll be Lee and likely Hitchens (unless Wilson gets his act together) until Smith can show he's reliable.

RCB - Carroll, Awuzie
LCB - Brown, White
NCB - Scandrick, Lewis
FS - Jones, Woods
SS - Heath, Blanton, Frazier (one of these two could be cut)

Note: This can shake up the most. Could see one or two rookies move into starting roles during the season.

I'm more enthusiastic about our 3 line front on passing downs with Jaylon or Lee or both blitzing from their LB spot.

On running downs I expect Crawford and Irving (after game 4) to be the starting DE's. All the others, including Lawrence, will be rotational guys IMHO.

I really just see 1 giant rotation

Base D might be TCrawford-MCollins-Paea-Mayowa

Then 3rd down DLaw-Irving-Tapper/Collins-Taco/Moore

I hope Moore pans out. He has so much potential but that is what is if your head is not straight. It would be a big bonus if he does pan out.

The guy hates football. That's a problem.

His only chance is if injuries wreck the position.

I'm not so sure about how final that rotation will be, depending upon how they fare once TC ends and the regular season begins. There could easily be some adjustments made, depending upon how their staff-rated level of productiveness is assessed when all is said and done. Some unexpected surprises are always within the bounds of possibility as the regular season approaches. It seems a valid list to start with, though.

That's kind of what I was after with this thread, there are so many scenarios that could play out. Tapper and Moore are the last guys on the depth chart at the moment (IMO) but could end up starting. This position is one of the big keys to the season and the most interesting to watch in training camp.

There are a thousand guys like that but Will McClay signed Moore. Moore also looked good in mini camp, it is Broaddus but FWIW Broaddus said Moore looked the best of any DE at RDE in mini camps.

If he was still a major attitude problem I really doubt McClay would have advocated for him, especially in an offseason where they have a ton of money to spend. McClay pulled George Selvie out of a hat also but that was at a time where salary cap money was tight.

I'm hoping the DE depth chart looks different than what it currently is. We need more than just length, we need pass rushers who have intimidation factor, technique savvy, durable and ability to threaten opposing team's game plans. Some real speed off the edge would not hurt either. Just do not see those kind of DE's on roster right now. Hope Taco, or anyone, proves me wrong.

I think we have guys with the physical talent, they said DLaw looked great yesterday. Charles Tapper got some good reports and runs a 4.6. Taco has a ton of talent. Moore has flashed.

Who knows how it settles in by opening day, but I think the physical talent is there. We have six candidates, if 3 or 4 emerge I think this position will play out much better than people expect.

An improved secondary will result in more coverage sacks as well.

I'd put Mayowa (who led the team in sacks last year) ahead of Moore and a part of me thinks Lawrence could play more LE.

On running downs I expect Crawford and Irving (after game 4) to be the starting DE's. All the others, including Lawrence, will be rotational guys IMHO.

I'd like to see this as well when we really need a pass rush. Start w/our best 3 rushmen, then blitz two from the LB/Secondary. Hopefully Jaylon's health allows him to bring his speed as it seems he'd be a great candidate for this role.

For whatever reason Lee doesn't seem like a great blitzer. Does everything else well...

Like I said, I hope someone/anyone proves me wrong. Lawrence's back (Tapper's too) just does not fill me with confidence. And I agree, Tapper should be a stud but he doesn't play like a guy with speed, he was more a power guy at Oklahoma. Maybe he's 100% AND just needed a DE whisperer like Marinelli to get the best out of him. Got my fingers crossed but crossing fingers/hoping should not be the only solution for pass rush issues if Cowboys want to take next step.

Big likes for the improved secondary, but again, hopeful. More youth/inexperience than injuries/talent issue, so that is a plus.
