Going to discuss our biggest flaw on defense and (in my mind), an easy fix of said flaw.

We cannot generate a pass rush. The front 4 on the defensive line are a collection of nearly embarrassing "talent".

Our secondary has performed above expectations these first two games. LBers are another story, but the secondary has been really solid.

So here is proposed fix: BLITZ!

I don't understand why Rod never implements blitz packages in the game plan. It's like he is one of those stubborn, old school coaches who wholeheartedly believes in his schemes, and is next to never willing to deviate from that.

But again, the secondary has played well despite having to cover receivers entirely too long. I think that if Rod would blitz a LB or safety even once a series, it could be a game changer in a positive way.

Thoughts?

I agree, but they need to be timely blitzes. Right now we are running these delayed blitzes where the LB waits like 1-2 seconds after the snap to go and we get nowhere near the QB, I have no idea what Marinelli is doing.

In an obvious passing situation, we blitzed Byron Jones and left Barry Church in coverage.

i'd also like to see our corners take a few more gambles and jump some routes.. i mean if you're going to get burnt anyways, might as well take a few more shots

My defensive idea: get better players

Marinelli and blitzing does not go well together, expecting him to change this late in game could prove disastrous.

He's actually tried, but the results have been wildly inconsistent depending on opposing team and quality of opposing teams coaching staff

I hear ya. It worked well in Washington last season. But you're right.. Having more quality down lineman would be pretty nice

The biggest thing about blitzing is that you have to have some line integrity for it to work.

Just sending players is not exactly all of the design.

Honestly, I don't see our front four, in any form, being able to do their jobs well enough.

from what i have seen in the past few seasons the offense knows when we are blitzing almost always,it seems like we dont practice it enough and we frankly suck at it.

Because for some reason when we blitz 7 defenders still get blocked by 6. Our blitzes literally do not exploit holes but just run into people.

We seemed to rush better with 98 at LDE and 96 at 3Tech. That might be a permanent move until week 5.

I agree -blitz some LB's !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its a scheme dependant on 4 man rush. Issue sint the scheme its the talent assembled. Any scheme dependant on a 4 man rush needs quality rushers. If you get them, they are hard to move the ball on

Our defense is punching in above their weight given the talent we have on our team. It's amazing we are holding teams to around 20 points a game when we lost Hardy, R. Mac, Gregory, Demarcus Lawrence, and I believe Tapper is out too. Thank God we found our qb, so we can now start to invest in our defense. I believe if Marinelli is given talent he will be able to field an elite defense here. As unfun as our defense is to watch, San Diego just laid nearly 40 on the Jaguars.

It doesn't matter what you do because the talent isn't there. There's very little talent and very little creativity. It's like they are perpetually trapped in the fourth quarter of a preseason game.
