For part deux of this miniseries, I thought we'd stay in the trenches, this time on the defensive side of the ball... I'm sure all serious Cowboys fans recognize that the team has a need at NT, but they might also look at DE in this draft, what with Spears and Hatcher coming up for free agency next year... as was the case with the offensive line analysis, my pet cats will be in blue font...

ROUND TWO:

Ron Brace, NT, Boston College... 6-3, 330 pounds, 5.5 second 40... the Boys have shown some interest in Ron, but I lost interest when I saw that dismal 40 time...

Jarron Gilbert, DE, San Jose State... 6-5, 286 pounds, 4.8 second 40... has NFL bloodlines, and the computer numbers you look for in a 3-4 DE... the Boys have shown an interest in him, too...

ROUND THREE:

Dorell Scott, NT, Clemson... 6-3, 310 pounds, 4.9 second 40... might be agile enough to project to DE in a 3-4 scheme... the Boys have shown some interest in him here lately, they'll apparently have him in for a private workout...

ROUND FOUR:

Ricky Jean-Francois, DE, LSU... 6-3, 295 pounds, 5.2 second 40... I'm leery of his back problems...

ROUND FIVE:

Terrence Taylor, NT, Michigan... 6-1, 306 pounds, 5.1 second 40...

Sammie Lee Hill, NT, Stillman... 6-4, 330 pounds, 5.1 second 40...

Chris Baker, NT/DE, Hampton... 6-2, 325 pounds, 4.95 second 40... scouts considered him to be strictly a DE candidate until he showed up for the combine at 325 pounds...

I could actually make a case for not drafting a DL until this fifth round range, or even a bit later... you have Hill and Baker likely to be on the board at this point, and guys like Roy Miller or Khalif Mitchell can be had even later...

ROUND SIX/ROUND SEVEN:

Everette Pedescleaux, DE, Northern Iowa... 6-6, 306 pounds, 4.95 second 40... my favorite sleeper 3-4 DE in this draft...

Ra'Shon Harris, DT/DE, Oregon... 6-4, 300 pounds, 4.9 second 40... I've seen Harris listed as heavy as 320 pounds, and as light as 298... at the former weight, he'd be an intriguing NT candidate, at the lighter weight he might work at DE... the Boys have shown an interest in him...

Roy Miller, NT, Texas... 6-1, 310 pounds, 4.9 second 40... I don't know why Roy doesn't rate higher than this, he's a very good run stuffer, perfect for a 3-4 scheme...

Khalif Mitchell, DT/DE, East Carolina... 6-5, 316 pounds, 5.05 second 40...

Jeremy Navarre, DE/FB, Maryland... 6-3, 286 pounds, 4.95 second 40...

Terrance Knighton, NT, Temple... 6-3, 320 pounds, 5.2 second 40...

Zach Potter, DE, Nebraska... 6-7, 280 pounds, 4.9 second 40...

Myron Pryor, NT, Kentucky... 6-1, 320 pounds, 5.05 second 40...

PRIORITY UNDRAFTED ROOKIE FREE AGENTS:

Henry Melton, DE/FB, Texas... 6-3, 270 pounds, 4.75 second 40...

Marlon Favorite, NT, LSU... 6-1, 316 pounds, 5.1 second 40...

John Gill, DE, Northwestern... 6-3, 300 pounds, 4.9 second 40...

Louis Ellis, NT, Shaw... 6-2, 316 pounds, 5.1 second 40...

Rhyan Anderson, DE, New Mexico State... 6-3, 286 pounds, 4.7 second 40...

Dexter Manley II, DE, West Texas A&M... 6-2, 286 pounds, 4.85 second 40...

Looking over this list, I could live with Chris Baker in the 5th and Roy Miller in the 7th...

I'm hoping the focus of this years draft will be a couple of DL and OLmen. I dont see the fascination in drafting another safety.

B/C our secondary was just as bad as our line.

I think we end up w/ 2 DB's and 2 OL

Ugh, your gonna bang out all these in a row?

Yeah, that's the plan, to look at positions of need for the Cowboys, and see who might be available in this draft to address those needs...

So far I've gone OL, DL and LB, next I'll be looking at DBs and WRs...

Is there an ignore button?

OK, who's forcing MB4 to read my threads?? Kindly knock it off right now, he obviously isn't interested in what I have to say...

I do, and will be discussing that in the next day or so...

But I share your hope for a draft that emphasizes both trenches...

The Cowboy were # 4 against the pass last year.

The Cowboys need a DE that can kick to NT and spell Ratliff and can kick inside and rush the passer in the Bear front or 4 man line.

They tried Spears, but he isn't a fit at NT. I would like to keep Spears. He should be cheaper than Canty, because he didn't play on 3rd down. (see Igor Olshansky)

I think Dorell Scott would be a NT that could kick to end. He doesn't seem to have the length Phillips likes at DE, though. I really like Scott, too.

Watch out for:

Alex Magee DT/DE Purdue (3)
Corvey Irvin DT/DE Georgia (4-5)

These guys should be able to play all three spots like Ricky Jean-Francois. Irvin is the guy to develop.

Edit: Alex Magee has 35 inch arms, and he's polished. Sammy Lee Hill has 34 inch arms.

Fili Moala (USC) would be another DE candidate.

You can thank Mr. Ware for that.
Our secondary is weak. We need another corner, and depth at safety(and probably a 2010 starter)

I think the Cowboys are interested in Fili Moala as well. He's around 6-4 and weights 305 lbs area. He should also be able to put on another 10-15 lbs or so. He could fill in at NT and DE.

i doubt that any site is going to be accurate enough to project with any real consistency 6-7th rounders and UDFAs

Not much, no... I don't think he has the quickness to succeed in the NFL...

several on here consider NFL Draft Scout to be one of the top, if not the top sites, when it comes to ranking players and round projection.

but i do understand what you are saying. there is very little difference between a 6th-UDFA grade. It's like a blind man trying to find a woman trapped in a tuna factory....lots of misses and very few hits.

I dont like the name Vance.....too Soap Operaish....Sounds like something from the Bold and the Beautiful or Melrose Place.....not the NFL.

BTW, I know there have been NFL playes named Vance before.....the WR from the Broncos in the 80s....but doesnt mean the name is any good.

Might as well be named Ridge or something like that.
