DL- Ferguson is a stud and locked up a few more years. We need a young NT to back him up, but we're OK here. At DE, Spears and Canty simply are not very good. Spears is a 1st round pick with a fat contract....not good. At least we're not married to Canty.

LB- MAJOR issues here outside of Ware. Ware is a stud, nuf said. Carpenter, not sure of- but he's not going to be dominate. 1st round pick with a pretty fat contract too. Adoyle (sp?) is fine for his contract. James is VERY over paid and isn't making plays. We are married to James after his extension. If Burnett were the answer, he'd play more. I don't know who is the odd man out here for find a pass rusher (we can't count on Ellis) with all these fat contracts and high picks that don't produce except for Ware.

DB's- Roy Williams is good, but overpaid IMO. We're married to him and he's not used properly out of neccessity. if you're going to pay this guy, get a decent FS and let him play near the LOS. Newman is a stud. Henry is oK and not over paid IMO. Glenn is good and around another year. May need a good young CB to throw in the mix.

Overall, DE, LB and FS are issues. Its not hard to find the holes. The bad news is, Dallas is married to a lot of these players. Some of them (Spears, Canty, Carpenter) were supposed to be cornerstones for years to come. Scary..

Carp's play is definitely starting to improve. It wouldn't surprise me next season if he's very solid and making plays. I don't think he's going to be a Pro Bowler, but I think he can have a very productive career as a Cowboy.

Canty and Spears are two more guys Parcells oversold. Kind of like Daleroy Stewart a few years back and Petitti this training camp. Bill touts these guys and they wind up crapping the bed. I liked Marcus Spears coming out and I realize a 3-4 end is not going to put up big stats, but I can't remember either of these guys making a play this year. Not one.

Mike, I'm there with ya, man. I tell you, a lot of folks like to debate Ware v. Merriman. Me, I am very happy with DeMarcus. I love him and what he brings. That is not to say that I am not impressed with Merriman, because obviously he is a great player, too.

Where I am going with this is, wondering Spears vs. Castillo. I understand it's really easy to play that game - the what ifs pertaining to draft selections. Everytime I see the Bolts play, I notice Jamal Williams and Luis Castillo being really disruptive inside.

Getting past wondering about that, I am also very disappointed with our two starting ends.

Anyone like the Marcus Spears / Julius Jones trade now instead of taking Steven Jackson?

Lot's of decisions that don't appear to be the best one's as we sit here today.

Bottom line...we are missing Ellis BIG TIME...no pass rush and we are weaker against the run...he made our defense so much better and more dangerous for offenses to think about having a threat on both sides...right now it is just watch out for Ware and pick the defense apart.

Also, everyone notice how weak we are up the gut of the field...send any receiver down the middle...our lbs are too slow and safeties can't cover (though we knew this in the preseason.

I'm all for getting Parrish on the field next week to see what happens...can't be any worse...

Maybe Ellis masked some problems with more of a push, but the bottom line is a lot of $$$ and draft picks have been poored into this defense and its not producing. Ellis wasn't one of those signings or picks. This defense has got issues and the personel in place is going to be here for a while or the cap will suffer........This organization may have missed the mark entirely and will pay for years to come....that's what I'm getting at-a long term nuise around the franchises neck with a bunch of below average defensive players......

The 3-4 blows chunks !!!!! We just don't have the ends to play it nor the kind of linebackers you need. I'm convinced both spears and canty are DT's not ends. They don't have the pass rush skills required to be an end. The weakness of the 3-4 is run defense unless you have some real good inside backers. We've proven in the last four weeks that our LB's don't shed blocks well and they can't take on a physical O-line. We've also reaffirmed we have no one outside of Ware who can rush the passer. This team is a mess right now. The euphoria of Romo has warn off and with that the optomism we had as a team has done the same. I commented to by son as we watched the game, that you can't count on Romo to always score of bunch of points to win a game. Some times you gotta win with defense and this team can't do that. ARGH!!!!!

Why stop at those two? Ferguson gets blown off the ball on almost every play. The point of attack of a 3-4 NT is a spot 2 yards behind the offensive LOS. Ferguson regularly occupies a spot 2 yards behind the defensive LOS.

And before morons start screaming that statistics don't show the worth of a NT, I understand that. I could care less about sacks or even TFL. I simply want a NT who doesn't make his tackles 8 yards down the field (some call it hustle, I call it getting blown back that far) but rather collapses the pocket from the inside.

Actually we get another guy who can get us 8-10 sacks from a LB position and try some guys at ILB who can COVER RBs and we are OK.

Actually Fergie has been very good this year. I don't know what games you have been watching but outside of Newman and Ware Ferguson has been one of the only guys doing good full time.

People talk of Ferguson's solid play but I simply don't see it. If you think that he's been solid, check out some of the other NTs in the league. Jamal Williams may be a tub of goo who wears down as the game goes on, but when he plays, he sets up a few yards in the backfield, disrupting runs and stops the QB from stepping up.

When was the last time you saw Ferguson in the opponents' backfield on a regular basis?

The real problem is the defensive scheme, they have none except straight ahead all the time, no stunting, no designs for particular off. schemes, just plain ole vanilla def. Most of the wrs route are where? almost to the sideline.Payton ran BP's off and Zimmer runs BP's Def. Because of Romo's ability to make some plays that Bledsoe couldn't we get the illusion that the off is good, but right now there is no illusion for the def. They do not have the players to play def just straight up.

I don't think Ferguson gets blown off the line often. The problem is that the two DE gets blown up too often and get pushed around and allow OL to get to the LB's. 3-4 depends heavily on the front three occupying the OL and allow the LB's make the plays but our DE's seem to have problem. Canty occasionally make a nice run stop but Spears is invisible.

Personally, I believe we actually have enough talents on D but the coordinator is not using them correctly. We need a true 3-4 coach.
