Defensive schemes against DET

I think we match up well with Det. They are scoring 20 ppg and allowing 17 ppg the latter being very good. We are scoring 29.2 ppg and allowing 22. More importantly we are scoring over 40 ppg lately which is incredible. We are #3 in Sc% but lately it's been drive score. Defensively we are 22nd in Sc% but we are 15th in points allowed. Our last four games we've allowed 28, 27, 7, and 17 with some of those with the coming against our non-starters and in prevent defense with the game well at hand.

Someone mentioned Cover 3 in another thread. Cover three generally plays the CBs with outside leverage. It's weak against the short pass, wheel routes, sprint outs etc and gives up holes over the LBers and in front of the deep DBs esp between the hash marks. Cover 4 not much difference.

I think you'll see a lot of SPs and hybrids with a lot of disguise presnap. We should be playing a 4-1-6 probably with Carter in the middle LB role and 4-2-5 Nickel with Carter and Hitch if he can roll. We'll play 3-2-6 as well as 7 DBs at times. We could also play a 3 stack if they start using Bush a lot. We should play some Cover One if they're ok with Wilcox deep. This and the Big Nickel could be our base packages.

You've got to account for Megatron as well as Bush. If you drop your coverage too deep too fast then they will get Bush involved underneath. You can't allow Megatron to get behind you though.

They'll likely throw some man free, combo man, man under etc in there as well as some mixed man/zone coverage. I'd roll coverage from Cover 1 and SPs at times to cover Megatron, drop the ends some, and disguise some coverages with a 9 man free. Carr may play man free with two deep.

Bell is their primary rusher but they are only averaging about 88 ypg. They average 3.6 ypc. They have allowed only 3.2 ypa. But I think we can run on them although running inside will be tougher than usual. I still think we can push Suh out of the run lane and allow him some upfield rush and either trap him or quick hit run to daylight.

The biggest keys to the game is pass defense differential, putting pressure on Stafford who can rattle easily, and stopping Johnson and Bush.

So basically they will show a lot of looks and schemes although I don't expect them to play all the schemes above. They'll find a defense with strengths towards what Det is currently doing and go with it. I think they can stop Bell reasonably well. That leaves Tate, Johnson and Bush as primary targets to stop. Tate has more targets but Johnson missed games 6-9 or 4 games. Johnson is still nursing an ankle injury. He was held out of practice today. Bell, BTW, has an achilles problem.

Some of you guys can add some stats and insight to this. I'm particularly interested in what you think our coverage shells will be base and passing downs.

Cowboys primarily play cover 3. Now way they try to man up against CJ again like last year. I say give up the short stuff, hit them hard, and try to contain big plays. Force Stafford to make a mistake.

I was suprised that they didn't use Bush that much in the GB game. He had 5 carries and 3 receptions. They used Riddick in some situations who had 5 receptions and scored a td. Bell averaged 4.6 a carry but only got it 13 times for 60. He really had little impact because of the lack of carries.

Yeah, they seem very confused on how to use their RB's. Bush has certainly lost a step. Riddick appears to be faster than Bush. Bell has had some success as of late but he is rarely going to take one to the house and you never know what you will get from him game to game.

Good thread jobber
Double CJ and be physical with him to let him know he will not beat us
Put Oscan on Tate
I think Detroit is an undisciplined team and will get demoralized if we can run on them and get in front

Personally, I would keep CJ in front let him catch short stuff and tackle him. Their offense feeds off the deep ball and big play.

Very true, at 6'05" with speed he has shown he can make those big plays even with a double team on him. I expect he will make some plays but unlike last time Dallas can't let him have a 300 yard day. If you get beat by CJ on a play you better quickly put that behind you and keep playing hard, do not start hanging your head and keep focused

I'd rather put Carr on him and line him up on Johnson's inside shoulder forcing him outside. Carr has to disrupt the route some though no matter what shoulder he gives up. I'd rather use the sidelines as another protector but you are taking a risk running a single high safety this way. Tate is no slouch. You could put OScan on Tate if you play a mixed coverage shell with two or three deep and Carr and OScan man unter. Not sure about playing these guys man free as that gives you one deep free safety. A straight man under with help over the top takes care of Johnson as best as you can but you have to then cover underneath as well as the problems you'd have with stacked receivers on one side. How are they going to cover 4 and 5 receivers. Their TE is no slouch either. If Stafford is on then Johnson is going to make some spectacular catches with two guys on him. He takes a hit well, too, so intimidation is only worth so much with him.

This is going to be interesting how they cover those two without too much imbalance elsewhere.

I expect a high scoring game from Det. More than the 20 they've averaged. But they can be contained. GB just did it but that was on grass.

Use Wilcox to spy on Johnson and pop him whenever he can square up and take a good angle.

Larry Warford sat out of practice, with a right knee injury from the GB game. Reports aren't looking good so far for him to play this weekend, hasn't even started running yet. That would be a big loss in the middle of their Oline, that was suspect to begin with. Hopefully we can get some pressure up the middle. Stafford was the 4th most sacked QB this year with 45 and 25th in completion %. I think our defense can harass Stafford into making mistakes.

I think we will have a nice game plan ready for them and Megatron. Rod went against them plenty with the Bears and that helps.
