I looked at the Chargers website to get an idea of how Wade approaches the depth chart on the defensive side of the ball. I did this because i wanted to see how many players he keeps at each position and here is what i see.

DE=7
NT=3
OLB=4
ILB=4
CB=5
SS=1
FS=2

I understand each team has different types of players and coaches adjust to the skills and strengths of the players they have on thier rosters, especially Wade. Also, it is a little hard to determine the defensive side of the ball without considering the entire roster, because depending on the flexibility of players on the game day roster, they might not take as many players for some positions (i.e., OL). Additioally, Wade has already said he is going to move people around, so someone like Carpenter will be playing both ILB and OLB.

Keeping all this in mind, how do you see the depth chart for the Boy's defense this season? The way i see it, and i realize it's way too early for this but what the heck i'm bored......

DE (5)=Spears, Canty, Hatcher, Ratliff, Bowen
NT (3)=Furgeson, Stanley, Olg (UDFA)
OLB (4)=Ware, Spenser, Ellis, Burnett
ILB (5)=Brady, Akin, Carpenter, Hoyte
CB (5)=Newman, Henry, Glenn, N. Jones, C. Brown (UDFA)
SS (2)=Roy, Keith Davis
FS (2)=Hamilin, Watkins

I'm i forgetting someone on DE? it seems like there should be more DE. Also i'm not sure where Elam and Glymph fit.

Ratliff and Bowen will also see some action at NT i believe.

any ideas?

What I'm hearing is Ratliff will play NT. Maybe some DE or DT in the nickel.

Edit: Maybe I should finish reading a post before responding... Busy day, and I'm tired.

Just a hunch, but I'm betting Elam takes Killer's job this year.

i think you might be right. With the drafting of Deon Anderson we might have replaced the killer with a lunitic headhunter:laugh2:

I don't think we'll keep three NT.

I agree with both of you... also why does every 1 always have Bowen on the roster... is there something i missed about this guy???

I haven't seen Bowen play much and i can't attest to his skill level, but i recently heard Jeff Ireland mention his name as someone who can play end and also help out at NT. Also, we don't have a whole lot of options at DE right now after Spears, Canty, Ratliff, and Hatcher, unless of course we sign a free agent that is significantly better than Bowen. Just my opinion.

Appreciate your checking out the Chargers depth chart. Didn't even think of doing that myself. Now if you could only check out all those other places where he coached to see if he followed the same pattern. Just kidding.

If he sticks to what he did before, there will be some changes on defense.
DL: Presume Canty/Spears/Hatcher/Ratliff play DE along with Bowen. AT DT will be Ferguson/Stanley (with assistance from both Ratliff & Bowen) so that leaves door for adding 3 more players to the DL.
LB: It's Ware/Ayodele/James/Ellis/Carpenter/Spencer/Burnett. Could Hoyte be moved back to LB or will another LB be brought in? Ireland said Cowboys tried draft DeOssie but he was gone so looks like Phillips trying add another LB but wasn't DeOssie projected be able play both inside/outside?
CB: Newman/Henry/Glenn but Reeves/Jones in trouble if either Brown or Ball show starter potential down the road.
S: Williams/Hamlin/Watkins seems lite to me. Maybe he relies on some CBs to be able play safety position in emergency. Reeves/Jones both played FS at times in last 2 years. That may save one of them but not both.

It will be real interesting to see what our defensive depth chart will be in September. It's not unusual for new coaches to make a lot of changes but on the other, we were 9-7 and viewed as underperformer and have some good players so it's not lack Phillips must clean out the whole defense and start over again.

I heard Jeff Ireland's interview and he mentioned the UDFA DT by the name of Ola Dagunduro from Nebraska whom he said to keep an eye on.

Hoyte as well as Polite are going to have a battle on thier hands at the FB position with Deon Anderson (a true fullback) and Jackie Battle now signed.
One way Hoyte can stick around if he loses that battle is by moving back to the LB spot.

I also believe there is a chance the Boys will bring in Randall Godfrey for a year, until they find somebody younger for ILB. Wade is familier with Godfrey and Godfrey is familier with the organization.

I like what you have done with this. I think Elam will compete hard against Davis and possibly win the backup SS. Also, with what I have about the NT position I don't know if the UDFA will make it or Stanley. I heard the really like Ratliff and Bowens in the middle. But hopefully one of the two makes it. I like your thought of Hoyte going back on D. I hope it plays out that way, he is an asset to this team. I hope that the UDFA FS (forgot his name) show something and make the team. I would rather carry 3 of them.

If Hoyte stays on it's at FB, not LB. Parcells liked him at LB because he's big and strong. But he's mind-bogglingly slow for a person his size, which is not Wade's cup of tea, particularly when you have a good deal of depth at LB.

I think this might be more realistic considering what Ireland said and how Wade has used players in past.

Starters in bold:
DE (5)= Ellis, Hatcher, Spears, Canty, Bowen
NT (3)=Ferguson, Ratliff, Olg (UDFA)
OLB (4)=Ware, Spencer, Burnett, Glymph
ILB (4)=Carpenter, Ayodele, Brady, Hoyte
CB (5)=Newman, Henry, Glenn, N. Jones, C. Brown (UDFA)
SS (2)=Roy, Keith Davis
FS (2)=Watkins, Hamilin

7 DE's in a 3-4 front is a ridiculous number.. is he only keeping 3 WR's to make up the difference?

That seems a bit much to me as well. It might have been the website that i looked at, the chargers haven't posted thier new depth chart and they have removed last year's. I just spent a few minutes looking at thier depth chart on espn web site and they only have 4 DE's listed. My bad:eek::

I still would like to know how everyone else sees the roster shaping up, especially on defense.

I'm always excited at this time of the year, envisioning how bad$%# our defense will be like and this year is no different. In fact, with Spencer on the team and with a new aggressive 34 scheme i can hardly contain myself. I just think we have the players to field an incredibly intimitading unit out there.

We have depth at LB?

Where?

If Carp moves inside we have 3 inside LBs.

After Ware, Spencer, Ellis and Burnett we have Glymph...factor in I bet Ellis plays more DE than LB and that gives us 6 guys, plus crap.

Reeves is not getting cut.

He has been our 4th corner and has started and done well.

Nate Jones is in trouble imo.

Thank you!! I've been thinking that Ellis might very well play some DE in Wade's system since it is now again a 1 gap system... and I've felt like I'm the only person in the world thinking that.

He played our first year in a 3-4 at DE... even though it was a two gap system and any speed loss from his achillies surgery will be less noticable there.

His quickness would be a significant plus while it didn't really matter in Parcells scheme. Shooting upfield at the snap should really help him out as opposed to having to hold up the tackle in Parcells scheme.

I may be off... but I really feel like he'll swing some between DE and OLB this season. I also feel like this year might be his last in Dallas.

I think you've got this exactly right.
