Defensive Takeaway’s

The issue over not getting many Takeaways this year and years past got me wondering on how long this has been going on.

After a little research, The cowboys have been Top10 in Takeaway’s 3Times since the 2006Season. Those times are the 2006,2010 & 2014 Seasons.

The 2014 Cowboys were 2nd in the
NFL in takeaways, which was the highest ranking we’ve had in that time period.

2006 & 2010 Seasons, The Cowboys ranked exactly at the 10th spot in Takeaways.

Side note: The website I used only went back to the 2006 Season.

I remember 2014 and the got a lot of good bounces that season. But This teams has ranked near the bottom of the league in takeaways a number of times with different DBs. I think its the way the play coverage. If you are not looking for the ball, chances are you are not going to intercept it. But then takeaways can also be fumbles. I've seen Lawrence bat at the ball in the QBs hand, but then this team tackles they don't drive people back or bang them. They are usually getting driven back a few yards. Aldo. if you take a bad angle to the ball carrier, it becomes a battle just to get him down, never mind trying to knock the ball loose.

True, The Coaches we’ve had/have havnt really put a lot of effort into teaching them/motivating to strip the ball or play the ball while it’s in the Air.

Part of the problem with our coverage is we keep everything in front of us for the sake of the big play, but allow the underneath. I also don't think Richard's prototype of a CB matters much unless your intention is to jam the WR into oblivion at the line and throw off route timing.

Instead, we line off 8-10 yards off ball and keep everything in front of us. It's why getting an INT feels like Christmas day.

That’s really the key here. I’m looking at Cameron Heyward and Minkah Fitzpatrick in this Steelers game and I’m thinking that’s what this defense is missing.

Another reason why I am not a fan of Garrett. Even though he is an Offensive minded headed Coach. I still think he has influenced the mentality of this team Defensively, when it comes to proactively chasing takeaways.

Kris Richard is vastly overrated
Our DT’s are awful, our ends are good enough
Terrible DT play is hurting our LB’s
We still don’t have a single DB that knows how to play the ball (maybe Lewis)
Jeff Heath has no business starting

Lewis is the only one and he's been relegated to lesser playing time in favor of people who are taller than him by an inch.
