In numerous conversations with various nfl fans, some coin phrases have been added into the everyday football lingo. To be honest i really doubt if people really know what they mean. maybe you all can shed some light on these for me. HYBRID: To me this is a guy who doesnt quite have the dimension u want or need at a certain position. ex. a hybrid safety is a guy who isnt big enough to play safety or fast enough to play corner. Most of the time I hear this word it is used in the context of " its a great innovation", This confuses me because ideally you dont want to have a hybrid anything, you want the right guys in the right places..
PEDIGREE: this one really kills me. Are we talking about NFL bloodlines, they come out of top coledge programs, or what? Does a guy have a pedgree because he isnt a hybrid :)D ).
It could possibly be guys are using terms they dont know the context of to sound more intellegent than they really are....
In that light i will solve all the cowboys problem and guarentee a superbowl win in one fell swoop. If The Cowboys sign a bunch of guys with pedigees , run various hybrid offenses and defenses, minimise the ground clutter ( i just made that one up) we WILL win the superbowl.

The pedigree thing gets me too. Just because my Dad can draw really well doesn't mean that I can. Sure, having that support and advice from a father figure that has been through it is valuable, but I think too much is placed on that word in terms of physical attributes or instinct. Those don't always carry on to your children.

Right Kind of Guy, Hybrid, Pedigree, Process and so on...all talking points.

Enough talk, just win already.

Here's another one that gets thrown around way too much "At the end of the day"

:banghead:

Hybrid - scout lingo he can play 2 positions but will be a project in either.

I'd define hybrid as a label that goes on a position even though the player doesn't exclusively play that position.

Aaron Hernandez is a "hybrid" tight end in that TE is his listed position, but he only had his hand in the dirt for 29% of his snaps last season.

Terrell Suggs was initially franchise tagged as a linebacker in 2008, but successfully argued that he played a hybrid OLB/DE position since he played 50 percent of the defensive snaps at end in the Ravens base defense.

I've always thought that a "hybrid" was a player who didn't fit any specific mold but had good attributes from a couple of positions, allowing him to play either.

I always thought it was a good thing.

"Tweener" seems to be the word used for a guy who doesn't have any specific position and will likely be limited in that he can only adequately fill some of the responsibilities of any position.

That term tweener can be used a lot of ways.
Since Dallas has gone to the 3/4 defense I look at tweener like this. I see tweener types at DE in college a lot. The proto-typical size types for college compared the NFL are vastly different. Especially at DE. I see a lot of DE players in college that are considered under-sized to play that position in the NFL. They haven't played OLB in a 3/4 defense so a lot of times these type of players slip in the draft just because nobody has seen them do it as an OLB in college. A perfect example of this would be Adrian Branch DE of Clemson in this last draft. Look out for this kid because I see him as a great candidate to play well as an OLB. He has tremendous pass rush skills and seems to have the agility to play in space as well.
The term tweener and hybrid get used a lot and they almost mean the same thing in the way they are used it seems.

By that definition - some used to call them types "tweeners" - generally speaking teams would shy away from those.

Here, let me explain it all away...nothing, got that? Nothing changes until Jerry fires himself....;) :starspin

Don't foget the very over used term in JAG....just another guy....or in some players...just another gut....

Anyway, it's very over used on many of players that don't desrve that.
What happened to...camp fodder....instead.

As a expert in languisticks allow me to handle this question.
As ever body who has ever gone to FFA or county extension shcool a hybrid is a result of two very good and pugnacous seeds or animals. so you have a better and more super strain.
So maybe a player who has played two simlar positions and developed into a great at one position or someone who transitions.
Yeah, thats right.

Yep, some people are obsessed with the Jacksonville Jaguars' players.

Hybrid started getting popular with the influx of 3-4 defenses in recent years. A guy is a decent pass rushing DE in college but is on the smaller side. Draft him with the intent to have him learn to play OLB in a 3-4. This is typically the context I hear the hybrid moniker used in the most.
