Define the 3 Tech position

Sports Illustrated Mock Draft (Feb 26th) (Cowboys Only 2 Rounds)
16. Dallas Cowboys (8-8): Aaron Donald, DT, Pitt.
Sure, Clowney’s 4.53 40 time was incredible. But Donald’s 4.65, at 280-plus pounds, might have been even better. The Cowboys do not have any cash lying around with which to re-sign Jason Hatcher. Nabbing Donald would make Hatcher’s impending departure sting a lot less. The Pitt product is capable of disrupting offenses on a consistent basis.
47. Dallas Cowboys: Scott Crichton, DE, Oregon State.

Who plays the 1 tech position for us, do we have a legitimate player for that position? maybe we should think on getting a 1 tech in this upcoming draft also.

Hayden... and Crawford could play the 1 if we bring in a legit 3. Wouldn't mind bringing in a 1 later in the draft like you mentioned and letting Crawford get some time at the 3 or DE.

Wow, I'd take that any day.

My super simple explanation:

The 3T is primarily a gap shooting (usually the "3-gap"- between the LG and LT) player. His main responsibility is to get up the field as quickly as possible to disrupt plays. He'll most likely be asked to play the run as a secondary consideration, or "on his way to the QB." The best 3T DT's will display some leverage and point of attack stoutness elements of a 1T/Nose Tackle, while possessing short area burst more frequently seen in DE's.

The best 3T prospects, in my opinion, are Aaron Donald, Dominique Easley, and Will Sutton. I also think Timmy Jernigan is a better overall player than Sutton and could work as a 3T, although it's probably not his best position.

One mock shows us taking Sutton in the 3rd. You'd think he might still be there, maybe due to short arms and height, academics, and subpar 40.
Guy can play, though.

I'll gladly take Sutton in the 3rd. Via Bryan Broaddus, it doesn't look like Easley's medical will allow him to be a Cowboy. Looks like a real shortage for top 3T options.

He had a very good combine. Great first step, 1.63 10 yd split (Clowney 1.59), 4.71 40 (Clowney 4.53), 7.55 3 cone (Clowney 7.29), 37" vert (Clowney 37.5"). Wing 82" (Clowney 83")He is only 6'1 (Clowney 6'5) but has great physical tools. Excellent bend. Was under-utilized at Arkansas. Had great Senior Bowl. Would compete for starting LDE spot over Spencer or Selvie.

I see Ford going in the first round. I don't like him at our 16 pick. Would choose him over Smith in the second though.

Kareem Martin- 6'6 272, 35" arms, 4.72 40 with 1.53 10 yard split, 7.2 3 cone, 35" vert.

If you wanna talk about 2nd round DE prospects this guy needs to be in the discussion. More athletic than Smith with 0 concerns about size. Very underrated on this board.

I think that Broaddus is even questioning whether Sutton can play the 3 technique in this defense. If so, he's probably going to need to get down to the 290-295 lb range.

If Easley is a scratch due to medical issues, then it may be Donaldson or bust for the 3 techniques in this draft. That may be why you're hearing more about resigning Hatcher or signing Melton.

Sutton could definitely play the 3 in this defense at that weight, but he might get hung up on blockers. Wasn't he one of the DTs that measured short arms at the combine?

Yes, he had short arms but compensates for that with very good technique. He's trying to get down to the 290-295 range for his Pro Day.
