Defining a #1 WR

I agree with Hos on his defination of a #1. However, I disagree that Hurd can't develop into one. By his defination, it is more about trust than physical tools. Although the tools play a big part in what a WR does, it does boil down to trust between a QB and a WR. I think in year 2 of a WR development, it is way to early to make any judgements about him.

From all accounts, Hurd works extremely hard at perfecting his craft. He works after practise, he studies hard.. he works on the little things. IF he keeps this up.. I see no reason why he can't be a #1.

To me a #1 receiver is a receiver that, no matter what game plan is used against him, and no matter how many guys are trying to stop him....A true #1 will always still find a way to "make it happen". Simple theory I suppose, but that's my take.

Does Hurd have it? I have absolutely no idea yet. He certainly has the skills though.
 
Its not just about size, speed or skills.....its about handling the pressure of being THAT guy, knowing you better make a play because no one else is, taking the team on your shoulders and saying, give me the ball - i'll make it happen.
 
I await Trickblue's opinion. I have it on good authority from him that Quincy Morgan will be a good NFL WR. :biggrin:

I'm not saying he can't develop into one, he certainly can. I just don't think it will happen. he's already behind Crayton on the depth chart. How does he leapfrog him?

Before we get to that point I think we will draft a WR who already fits the description.

Your point is taken. sounds like you are refering to him being a #1 on this team.. I was refering to in general. He may never get the opportunity here in Dallas, but I still think he could be a #1 in this league, given time.

FWIW, I still believe that Roy Williams will be here when he hits Free Agency, and he will be our future #1.

I think the only way he leapfrog Crayton is if injuries come into place and he is given a chance to start, and if he starts he is going to have to shine.

If Hurd would put on 15 lbs of muscle and strength then based on seeing him on the field......imo he does show the skill set required to be a #1 wr in the nfl.

Experience and strength is all that is lacking.
 
To me a #1 receiver is someone that has enough in his skill set theat you can design your gameplan around him. it means that even if the defense knows your going to get them the ball he can still get open so you can get the catch.

A #1 WR is not what he is but what he does.

You have to be fast because if you cannot get the defense to respect you r ability to strretch the defense you limited. OTOH, you dont need to be big. it helps especially to run possession routes but is not necessary. You cannot make up for speed though

the route running hands, hands, concentration are a given necessity.

But at the end of the day it comes dow to what he can do and if the receiever skillset is such that the OC can design the passing game aound them and he hads the ability to beat double coverage and a defense game planning for him then you have a #1 WR.

Hurd is not a #1 WR. He needs to show a heck of a lot more than a few catches before we come to a conclusion one way or another.
 
I hope that Glenn is okay for the opener. But if he is not, I wouldn't be surprised to see Hurd starting along side T.O. with Crayton as the #3. Something about Hurd sticks out.

I think he's going to make it real tough for guys like Miles Austin to make the roster. Unless we keep 6 WRs
 
I think Hurd all the qualities of a #1 except experience. When I watched the game again last night (for the 12341345454 time) one thing that jumped out was how good Hurd was at blocking. He was the reason our RBs got to the outside so easily.

He can catch, he runs good routes, now all he has to do is demand respect. He has to go out, take a slant and get killed, and beg to run another slant. He has to go up high for an un-catchable ball (unlike what Miles Austin did in the denver game) and take one for the team.

He has to demand you go to him and that you can trust him no matter what, then when his number is called, he has to come through.

The number one quality of all true #1 receivers is the ability to uncover.

I've seen true#1 WR who we're the fastest WR on thier team, ones that weren't the biggest on their team. I've even seen some who didn't have the best hands on their team.

I've never seen one that wasn't the best at uncovering on his team.

A true #1 receiver can not be single covered effectively, he commands a double team. When he is singled up, it should only take a good from the pass from the QB to almost assure a completion.

A teams pass offense is built around a #1 WR.

The opposing teams defense starts with how they plan to stop him.
 
I say, 2 seasons in a row Hurd has come along nicely as a secondary receiver and that the jury is still out on him until he gets that true chance to show what he's got.

What I like about this situation is that I can't see TO "mentoring" some idiot whose potential is just not there. TO obviously sees something special in this kid or just wouldn't waste his time, and for the time being I believe I'm going to trust that intuition of Owens'.

Another fact I seriously like about Hurd is, all last season before Romo stepped in, chances are he was doing a serious load of the work with our now starting qb. And I think that's alot of what we're seeing start to transpire.

Hurd a future #1 though? Not out of the question.
 
The 22 year old Sam Hurd looked pretty good last night and it looks like Romo loves to throw him the ball when he is in there.

If Glenn doesn't stay healthy Hurd could already be getting his audtion as a starter because I think we'll leave Crayton as the #3 and put Hurd as the #2.
 
As Michael Irvin told us about the 49ers championship game debacle:

(paraphrase) "Troy came in the huddle and said everything was coming my way, no matter what."

You'd only tell that to a #1 WR.
