Deleting old software that's been updated

I'm trying to clean up my 'puter and I have a bunch of Java updates in my Add/Remove Programs that count 119mb per update.

Can I delete the older updates and just keep the latest update?

You can delete the earlier Java installs. Just keep the most recent.

119 mb / update? That sounds a little big. Are you certain those are not MS updates from Windows update? Don't delete those.

I've got five Java runtime updates

J2SE runtime environment 5.0 Update 2 (117MB), 4 (118mb), and 6 (119mb)

Java runtime environment, SE v1 4.2_03 (136)

Java (TM) 6 Update 3 (111mb)

Yes you can un-install those.

I would ditch 6 and 5. I only use v1 4.2_03 on my Dell XPS 700 system here at the house. No problems.

If you go to control panel and pull up JAVA - you can check which version your system is running.

This particular computer is a Dell Inspiron 1150.

Took me a min to figure out where to find Java. I was in the Category View.

Says I'm I'm running Java SE 6 v1.6.0. Does that mean I can delete every one, but the Java TM 6?

After you uninstall a bunch of stuff like that it is always good to run defrag and check disk sometime to increase you performance as well

I had Office XP w/Frontpage. I just installed Office 2003 and am considering installing Office 2007. Kinda nervous about that. Anyway, if I uninstall Office XP w/Frontpage, will that hurt anything? That takes up about 240mb+

It is better to have a whole new install over adding to the older one in most cases.

Same with your Java...you could have uninstalled all of those updateds, uninstalled java itself. Then went and downloaded the newest version and did the updates from that.

What you might also want to do is get a registry cleaning program as some programs leave trace elements in the registry even after you have done an uninstall.

I've been cleaning up my laptop. I've got to do this on my desktop, as well.

In fact I do not even use adobe reader anymore I use foxit reader (it is free) it is smaller opens faster and is not the pig on resources that adobe reader is. Plus it plays nice with firefox which adobe does not always do.

I've been cleaning up my laptop. I've got to do this on my desktop, as well.

I don't know any of the newer ones.

I have one saved on disk somewhere called regcleaner that seemed to do a nice job. But I am sure you can go to one of the free download sites and find a good one.
