DeMarco Murray -- A Conspiracy Theory

After pondering about why the run game was seemingly shutdown in the second half of the Green Bay game, a thought occurred to me.

What if DeMarco Murray was shut-down intentionally?

What if his contract stipulates some 'cap unfriendly' incentive (or contractual incentive) for achieving say 1300 yards rushing?

I posed the question to a good friend of mine (who is also a Cowboys fan) and he said, 'Jerry wouldn't mind paying him his money if he met his incentive. In fact, he would be happy to do it.'

I said, 'Yes. I don't doubt for a second that Jerrry wouldn't mind paying him. But what if the achieved incentive (again, hypothetical 1300 yards) was achieved and the incentive negatively impacted this year's cap (or next season's cap)?'

I decided to post my theory here to see if anyone could answer the question of how incentives impact the current year's cap? or the next season's cap? or do they not impact the cap at all?

Also, is the contract for DeMarco Murray available to the public? Specifically, any incentives that he might achieve?

Some MLB teams shut-down pitchers (and other young players) at year's end to ensure they that do not achieve their contractual incentives (and to extend the number of years that the team has control over that player).

I realize this is totally 'out there' but it would certainly answer a few questions. Of course, it would open a whole new can of worms.

I do love a good conspiracy theory.....

Any other factors aside, even if your theory was correct, the team has other options at running back and could have used any of them.

This wasn't any sort of plan, just incompetence.

The only reason why I could see we limited his carries was to save him for the rest of the game and the next 2 games. Still, he should have had 25 carries in this game.

IF and this is a big IF there was an incentive for him to reach 1k, 1.3 k and so on...chances are they are not too big.

Hundred grand tops I bet and again that is IF and chances are that is still on the high side.

You don't see to many players on rookie contracts with huge escalators in the contracts...he did not have a ricky williams type contract.

So I find the idea that they are holding back his carries and his yards to not hurt their cap situation due to high priced incentives in his rookie contract a little far fetched.

What's it going to be then, eh?

It was just a thought....

You could still spin in as if he is not viewed as a vital part of the offense, he is easier and cheaper to re-sign in a year or two.

I did find the Packers defender comments interesting. They truly respected him and our running game and they still could not stop it.

Speaking of Murray.. does anyone know what he was shouting on camera after that last Romo pick? It was as he was walking off the field and he had his helmet off already.

lol. The brain trust in this organization isn't anywhere NEAR capable of this. It's not a conspiracy, it's just plain idiocy.

I think he said, '....Only 323 yards to go....' -- but don't quote me.

I've wondered off and on if DeMarco is capped somewhere around 20 carries for fatigue issues. He doesn't look fatigued though, does he?

In any case, like OP I can't understand why he rips off chunks of yardage for a while, then Garrett sends him out to get him a sandwich, or something.

A season-long conspiracy to limit his running yardage is on the high end of unlikely, even though I vaguely recall Parcells not going out of his way to get Julius Jones to 1000 a while back.
