After pondering about why the run game was seemingly shutdown in the second half of the Green Bay game, a thought occurred to me.
What if DeMarco Murray was shut-down intentionally?
What if his contract stipulates some 'cap unfriendly' incentive (or contractual incentive) for achieving say 1300 yards rushing?
I posed the question to a good friend of mine (who is also a Cowboys fan) and he said, 'Jerry wouldn't mind paying him his money if he met his incentive. In fact, he would be happy to do it.'
I said, 'Yes. I don't doubt for a second that Jerrry wouldn't mind paying him. But what if the achieved incentive (again, hypothetical 1300 yards) was achieved and the incentive negatively impacted this year's cap (or next season's cap)?'
I decided to post my theory here to see if anyone could answer the question of how incentives impact the current year's cap? or the next season's cap? or do they not impact the cap at all?
Also, is the contract for DeMarco Murray available to the public? Specifically, any incentives that he might achieve?
Some MLB teams shut-down pitchers (and other young players) at year's end to ensure they that do not achieve their contractual incentives (and to extend the number of years that the team has control over that player).
I realize this is totally 'out there' but it would certainly answer a few questions. Of course, it would open a whole new can of worms.
I do love a good conspiracy theory.....
