IRVING – DeMarcus Lawrence understands that he’s going to have some rust to shake off in the upcoming weeks.
The Dallas Cowboys rookie defensive end will practice Wednesday for the first time since fracturing his right foot during individual drills in training camp on July 29.
Lawrence still has a screw in his surgically-repaired foot and doctors are determining if it will eventually have to come out, but as of Tuesday afternoon, Lawrence said his foot “feels excellent.”
“I’ve been playing football all my life, so I don’t feel like I’m way behind,” Lawrence said, “but I feel like I’m going to have to get better, quicker.”
Lawrence, who has been on the injured reserve/designated to return list, is not eligible to play in a game until Week 9. The plan is for the early second-round pick to gradually work into individual drills before joining team drills.
“It got hard at times,” Lawrence said. “I just had to come to the realization that I was going to be back real soon, so just sit back and just count down the days and the weeks. Now it’s almost here.”
While discussing the team’s 5-1 start Tuesday morning, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones mentioned Lawrence after saying the team has help on the way. Jones considers Lawrence, one of the draft’s top pass rushers, as basically a first round pick.
“It feels great knowing that the team can produce and the things these guys are doing without you,” Lawrence said of Dallas’ hot start. “It just makes me feel like I can come in and help a lot more and we can be even better than we are right now.”
