Not their parents...

I was listening to the radio and they were talking about this. The parents in no way support their decision.

What we need to do is throw the book at the young girls and agree to lessen the charges if they tell who recruited them, how they did it and who else is involved. They also have to agree to counseling...

Sorry - you're right. It was more of a personal view than anything related to the actual news story. I edited that post and removed the video link.

I agree.

I think some people don't realize that having "rights" in the USA does not include actual plotting of terrorism or even threatening to do it. The law is clear on this.

It's kind of ironic. Two of the girls stole $2,000 from their mother, for the purpose of traveling to a Middle Eastern country, where they would have likely had a hand cut off if they had committed the same crime in that country.

Note to parents: secure your money and passports. You may want to invest in a floor safe. A bank safe deposit box would be preferable.

???

Minors are individuals, independent with minds of their own. While the overwhelming majority of minors do not take actions such as what was described in this instance, some consider acting in similar fashion. The two young women did not earn the $2,000. Both stole the money. Unless they feel their personal safety is threatened and require transportation to escape harm, minors should not use passports to permit international travel without their parents' knowledge and consent.

Personally, I do not know of a 100% guaranteed precaution that predetermines and prevents minors from doing something he or she intends to do. Parents can eliminate involuntarily aiding their children into taking actions that may be harmful to themselves or others. Alternatives to keeping passports in a floor safe or bank safe deposit box may be better options but the examples are certainly not "over the top." Do you believe it is wise to provide unrestricted access to children to possess important documents such as passports for any reason? As far as money is concerned, do you think it is not wise to prevent someone, even young people, from gaining possession of your money to use for purposes you do not authorize?

They can't use their parents' passports so that is silly. We keep ours in a drawer, never been an issue.

a floor safe is a waste of $. Just don't keep that much cash in your house. Problem solved.

What the..?

The children used their own passports. Why would they use their parents' passports? What airport authority (other than someone blind, incompetent, or criminally-inclined) would allow passage for any individual using another person's passport?

A floor safe would be a wasted investment for you. Your circumstances does not automatically correlate with everyone else's.

No one knows the exact reason why $2,000 was in the house. Regardless, people have kept valuables inside their homes for as long as the existence of roofs. It is far from being an uncommon practice. The question should always be how to protect your valuables if they are not securely contained. A floor safe would be an alternative for those wanting to keep their valuables at home. A safe is not the only alternative but it is an option to consider in addition to "not keeping that much cash in the house."

Teenagers do stoopid things. And many folks have had issues with the difference between idealized visions and the reality on the ground.

Doesn't help that ISIS seems to have a pretty savvy web presence.

My 15 year old daughter just showed me a long list of Facebook friends requests from people with middle eastern names the other day. She said she has at least 20 of them and gets more all the time. She doesn't know any of the people. Do they spam kids looking for recruits? I don't know, but she doesn't know a single middle eastern person, yet a lot of them seem interested in knowing her.

It is similar to the teenagers that get swept up into a cult.

It said "secure your passports". I was responding to that. It did not say, keep their passport from themselves. One could argue that since passports are govt property, the parents do not have the right to withhold the childrens' passports anyway. We do not own passports, we only borrow from the govt the right to use them.

You do not have to keep that much cash in the house, you can take what you need from a bank machine.

30 years hard labor. Or perhaps experimental drug testing. I'd prefer the latter.

Curious here...Does she play the online (facebook connected) game called Criminal Case?

If so that might be why she is getting the requests.

I don't know if they have some kind of click farms or if it is just huge in the middle east and india but when I played that game there were HUGE numbers of people that where either from india (not saying india is muslim) or other areas that are known to be mostly muslim. It was HUGE it got so bad that I got tired of all of the posts about the games from these facebook members who would constantly be posting or asking for this or that for the game. So I blocked any posts that dealt with the game and eventually deleted most of those players from my friends list.
