Depth Chart updated

I agree that it's a concern, which is why I don't agree with Dallas not using him on punt returns during the preseason. If the Cowboys are thinking about using him there during the season, then he needs to show that he's overcome his failures to field the punt.

That's good point and I'd prefer any mistakes be made or corrected before the games count. That said, this may simply be a case of not having him return punts in preseason game one rather than a decision made for the entirety of the preseason.

There are some problems that can be fixed with fielding punts (such as taking your eyes off the ball) and some that can't (such as not being able to judge spin/trajectory). I'm not sure where Austin has had problems with it, or that we have the staff to fix it at this point, considering our special teams coach is certainly no expert.

I'm not exactly sure either, but it's concerning that he's had a rather high turnover rate consistently throughout his career. The return game might be an area where we struggle this year.

The only thing I found really interesting were the return men. Now, it might be that Dallas just threw darts at a board in that regard, but I didn't know Lewis and Thomas might be considerations there.

We've seen Austin back returning punts in camp, and I figured Thompson was an option on kick returns, which might still end up being the case.

Lenoir as a punt returner is not surprising, but the rest kind of are, for me anyway. ... We'll see how it shakes out.

Let's hope Lenoir can handle that job capably. I guess the staff was leery about Austin's past handling punts. Wise decision, perhaps!

I have to give Lenoir credit, the guy is working his tail off and doing anything and everything to make this team. If he doesn't, it certainly won't be for lack of effort.

LOL over consternation of a training camp depth chart!

The only depth chart that I care about or that actually mean anything is the one leading up to week 1 of the regular season.

He seems well on the way to making it impossible, if not very difficult, for the team to cut him. He's been a pleasant surprise for sure.

No hand wringing here, although I do find it interesting, though. It's like a new tale comes to light every day. ;)

Did they say they weren't going to let him return punts throughout the preseason? And did they say he was going to return punts in the regular season?

I'm not calling your comments into question, I just haven't heard or read anything about this.

Looking back on what O'Quinn said, the answer is no they didn't say it. He just said they don't need to see him "right now."

I'm going to assume that we're not likely to see him do it until the third preseason game/the warm-up because of the high-impact nature of the position and his value on offense.

Frankly, though, considering his fumbling past, I'd put him out there for every opportunity when bullets are flying before I'd trust him during the regular season ... even if all we have him do is fair catch.

I agree. O'Quinn's comments don't rule that out.

O'Quinn says it's a matter of knowing what Austin can do. Hopefully, they know he can fumble at a pretty high rate as well.

I think Austin is our best bet at dynamic returns, but it won't matter if he drops the ball.

I'm curious to see if he'll get a chance to return punts in preseason games.

If so, it seems like he'd better make the most of it. His history is scary.

One bad muff could easily signal his last chance on punt returns.

Jihad Ward for sure. At this point he is our best penetrating DT by a wide margin. We need to see the preseason games but he has the potential to be a great fit for that spot in Marinelli's scheme.

I do think Collins is an above average 3T but if you expect Irving to come back and start at 3T so Collins would be the 1T, I would keep him there all year.

If Price has improved over last year, I wouldn't have a problem starting him at 1T though. He was solid last year and it sounds like he has improved with coaching and conditioning.

Here's a tidbit from Broaddus latest piece, for what it's worth:

  • Antwaun Woods has emerged as the starter over Jihad Ward, who was a much better player in the OTAs. Where Woods has shown up is in the power department. When the pads came on, he became difficult to block. As a whole, this group needs some juice and Woods has provided that. What I am keeping an eye on is if Woods can carry his momentum into this game. He has looked solid against some of the best offensive linemen in the league, so it gives me a little hope that he’s just not some flash in the pan type of player -- that there is actually some real skill with him for the position.

Let the best man win. Ward has a ton more reps in NFL games however, but Marinelli has silk pursed guys like George Selvie before. Terrell McClain was sitting on his couch at home when Marinelli called him, so you can't rule it out for Woods either.

And just for snits and giggles I looked it up, McClain has made 13.5 Million dollars since leaving his couch to play for Marinelli.

They let Jerry's secretary's Grandson make this roster. He's in 3rd grade.

Some things just stay the same, like the DC website being unable, at times, to keep their roster updated or accurate. They don't have OL Dustin Stanton listed on the roster, and Jordan Chunn is listed twice as a veteran - first as a 4 year vet, and then again as a 7 year vet. I understand that uniform numbers aren't given a lot of thought until game time, but Jeeze, get it together!

They just changed A.Woods to DT instead of NT. They had Woods as NT but Brian Price as DT despite the fact they play the same position.

Aside from the Cowboys specific issues, rosters should do a few user friendly things like list C as OC, G as OG and T as OT such that they sort together.

At least the Cowboys now have all LBs as LB instead of the random ILB, OLB and all Safeties as S instead of randomly FS and SS.
