did thomas ever have 20 sacks in a season?

I don't know the stats, but if he did, then he is better based on his total career. If not...Ware is the better talent.

It's still probably a toss up at this point, but I'd give the edge to DeMarcus.

Living in the heart of Chef territory I saw many Derrick Thomas games. He was great at rushing the QB. But, in my opinion, he was just average in stopping the run and in his coverage skills. Many teams would scheme their offense right towards Thomas because he didn't make many plays past the line of scrimmage. That Seattle game singlehandedly put Thomas in the HOF. If not for that game, he wouldn't be getting honored right now.

As for the comparison between Thomas and Ware, I think Ware is better in every aspect of playing LB in the NFL. Should Ware continue playing at his current level for the next several years he will be a first ballot HOFer.

Thomas was one of the all-time great pass-rushers. Ware could be on his way to becoming one.

Thomas, though, wasn't known as being great against the run, whereas Ware excels in that area.

While Ware isn't at Thomas' level yet, he's probably more well-rounded than Thomas was.

I remember watching that game and I was in awe as DT came around the end time after time. Having said that, I still believe DWare is every bit as good. He hasn't done it for as long but he is just as dominant and he's done it against better teams. DT played most of his time against the weak rams, seahawks, falcons, and raiders. During that era those teams didn't have the best offensive lines and he could pretty much tee off every play. He was great but DWare is every bit as great. The only complaint that I have on Demarcus is that he seems to get a chunk of his sacks during mop up time instead of the meat of the game to make a difference. I'm NOT saying he doesn't get those sacks as well just that he gets a chunk more in the last few minutes of meaningless games.... purely on the eyeball test... no actual stats. I know some of you are going to smoke me on this but the fact is I think DWare is great no matter what or how what I said in this post is interpreted so I stick my tongue out at all of you who just want to attack someone.

Ware's career sacks by quarter --

First quarter -- 17.5
Second quarter -- 13.5
Third quarter -- 11.0
Fourth quarter -- 11.5

Now would be an excellent time to duck out of this thread, Star.

It is a very good question. I think you have to give it to Thomas until Ware achieves a similar sustained success. I think Ware is better against the run than Thomas ever was.

What a second half slacker, maybe we can trade him for at least a second.

Thomas could literally dominate a game from a pass rushing perspective. Gunther Cunningham has talked about how Thomas had 5 sacks in a game and they were beating the crap out of their opponent. He pulled Thomas and called off the dogs as to not embarrass the other team.

Ware is very good but I have not seen him dominate like Thomas could. I imagine with Wade calling the defense that could change.

I don't know about that, the guy was selected to 9 Pro-Bowls in 11 seasons. He might have had to wait a bit longer if not for his 7-sack game but he would still get in.

7 was against Seattle and Dave Krieg. That is the NFL record. He and Osi Umenyiora share 2nd place with 6 sacks in one game.

If Ware continues to average 15 sacks a season and keep doing the other things for 5 more years he is a shoe in for the HOF. If he can keep it up for 8 more years then he could very likely end up #2 all time in sacks. That would more then likely have him go in as a first ballot HOF.

The game he got 7 against Seattle was great. The game he got 6 against Oakland was awful, Oakland was pathetic that night (not because the Chiefs were that great either). They gave up 12 sacks total.
