We're a year removed from the Roy Williams trade, and while the Lions' end of the deal (rookies Brandon Pettigrew, Derrick Williams and Aaron Brown) will take some time to bear fruit, there's no question the Cowboys have to be kicking themselves.

Peter King's MMQB column this week highlights the folly in giving up first- and third-round picks (plus a sixth-rounder) as well as a five-year, $45 million contract extension to an overrated receiver who not only isn't Terrell Owens, he's not Miles Austin, either.

In his last two games, Austin has 16 catches for 421 yards and four TDs. In his 17 games since the trade, Williams has 31 catches for 428 yards and two TDs. And as King notes, "Draft picks used to acquire each: Austin 0 (undrafted college free agent out of Monmouth, 2006); Williams 3 (first-, third- and sixth-round picks in trade with Detroit, 2008). Throw in the salary disparity -- $451,000 this season for Austin, vs. $9 million annual average for Williams -- and King concludes: "In sum, Austin makes 1/19th annually what Williams makes, and he's produced as many yards in two weeks as Williams has in a totally unproductive 12 months with the Cowboys."

The Media (and some Cowboy fans) aren't going to be happy until Roy goes all "TO" on everyone and throws a tantrum on the sideline.

We get it, Roy is struggling.

I still like our array of offensive weapons. Makes it harder for teams to defend us.

Nobody can ever just be content with the team performing well and winning football games...gotta find a way to get us in the headlines.

No punts hitting the TV? check.
No TO accusing teammates of secret meetings? check.
No Pacman Jones? check.
No turnovers from the QB this week? check.
WR that was acquired from a trade only a year ago struggling a bit? FEEDING FRENZY.

As if there aren't any other players in the NFL struggling right now. Did anyone watch the Cardinals put a beatdown on the Giants save for really a flukey tip and catch by Hakeem Nicks?

Anyone watch the Bears get absolutely housed by the Bengals?

Anyone watch the Saints get bailed out by the horrendous game management of Tony Sparano?

Anyone watch Jake Delhomme have ANOTHER multiple interception game?

The nerve of a Detroit publication to gloat about anything with that poor excuse for a football team they have. I wouldn't be surprised if the players they got in the trade don't really amount to squat. Roy's career is not over. I am disappointed in his production so far, but I would not be surprised if he and Romo start clicking some time soon. What will the naysayers say then?

Well they drafted Crayton and developed Austin so they did something right, but yes the 'sexy" and hyped choice has been something Dallas has had to pay a pretty penny to get.

Rocket Ismail, Joey Galloway, Terry Glenn, Antonio Bryant, Keyshawn Johnson, Terrell Owens have all dawned the Dallas uniform this decade, their talent collectively representing the lion's share of their generation of wideout talent but seldom has it clicked in tandem for Dallas.

I think Roy will come around, but I understand the fan frustration with him (me included). Personally, I say bench Roy and play Austin and Crayton. That seemed to light a fire under Crayton, maybe it will work for Roy.

Someone had to throw Detroit a bone, they can't play the Skins every week after all :laugh2:

Enjoy getting the better end of this trade Lions maybe it can take some of the sting out of the 1-15 season you're having

Patrick Crayton doesn't scare anyone, I'd rather try to keep him focused on coming in as a third receiver primarily in the slot.

Defenses should now be paying lots of attention to Miles Austin and Jason Witten on passing downs with Roy Williams getting more single coverage.

Tony Romo and Roy just need to keep working together until they click.

I'm frustrated about Williams' numbers like most fans, but the only way to cure things is to play him.

Roy and Romo worked together during the off-season and it helped, but there is no substitute for playing games together.

So exactly how many other receivers that make tons of money have posted 400+ yards in their last two games?

You see, the fallacy here is the comparison.

Roy is struggling. But that doesn't mean he will always do so.

Nor does it mean we can count on Austin to post an average of 195 yards and two touchdowns per game.

So many people are quick to point out don't react too soon when it comes to certain players who are fan favorites and are struggling.

Maybe we should just allow this to play out and see where we are at the end of the season.

Does Roy need to step it up? Yep.

Does his past performance here mean he can't? Nope.

Thanks Detroit for gloating when you have one win in two seasons.

No, he is not because Galloway was at least a very good WR with colosally bad QBs during his stay here.

RoyW is producing at the rate of a mediocre #3 WR on a team with a Pro Bowl QB.

Why in the world would the author think the Cowboys would somehow be more angry about Roy's struggles after watching Miles put up big numbers?

Let's assume all the hype is accurate, that Miles can be a good #1 receiver in the NFL and Roy can't -- or at least not here. If Miles and Roy both continue to produce at close to their current levels, then from the team's point of view, converting an undrafted free agent into a stud would offset, not exaggerate, the cost of spending a low 1st and a 3rd on your #2. Looking at the corps as a whole, we spent a total of a 1st, a 3rd, a 7th, and a 6th-7th trade down to acquire a legitimate #1 (Austin), #2 (Williams), #3 (Crayton), #4 (Hurd), and #5 (Ogletree).

Maybe you don't necessarily like the cost of that one piece, but taken as a whole, it has balanced out for us.

Even if it doesn't cause Roy to improve, we will at least be a better, more united team without the malcontent out there. I think the whole team should give Roy a good old-fashioned shunning until he turns his act around.
