We're a year removed from the Roy Williams trade, and while the Lions' end of the deal (rookies Brandon Pettigrew, Derrick Williams and Aaron Brown) will take some time to bear fruit, there's no question the Cowboys have to be kicking themselves.
Peter King's MMQB column this week highlights the folly in giving up first- and third-round picks (plus a sixth-rounder) as well as a five-year, $45 million contract extension to an overrated receiver who not only isn't Terrell Owens, he's not Miles Austin, either.
In his last two games, Austin has 16 catches for 421 yards and four TDs. In his 17 games since the trade, Williams has 31 catches for 428 yards and two TDs. And as King notes, "Draft picks used to acquire each: Austin 0 (undrafted college free agent out of Monmouth, 2006); Williams 3 (first-, third- and sixth-round picks in trade with Detroit, 2008). Throw in the salary disparity -- $451,000 this season for Austin, vs. $9 million annual average for Williams -- and King concludes: "In sum, Austin makes 1/19th annually what Williams makes, and he's produced as many yards in two weeks as Williams has in a totally unproductive 12 months with the Cowboys."
