Detroit game thoughts...

I am glad we won and are 7-3, but I think people are really kidding themselves if they think we are one of the better teams...thoughts:

1) that was just a piss-poor display of how to rush the passer and how to protect a QB today (again)...I think we knocked Harrington down once or twice the entire game, and thats just 6 days after hardly touching McChoke as well...people *****ing and moaning saying we should have drafted Merriman instead of Ware need to seriously realize that if Ware were in San Diego playing for Wade Phillips he'd probably have 7 or 8 sacks now, and if Merriman were here he'd probably have what Ware has here...Zimmer has never done a good job of pressuring QB's, and it appears teams have started figuring out how to fend off our weak rush again...everyone thinks we blew the Washington and Seattle games (and nearly the NYG game) because of Cortez or because we didnt score more, but we lost because we CANT RUSH THE PASSER with any consistency...Harrington had 10+ seconds to throw on TWO different plays today and was hardly ever pressured or touched...as for our pass protection, all the yay-hoos that made arses of themselves cheering with glee over how losing Flozelle Adams was an "upgrade" or a "blessing" need to stand up and be accounted for...Tucker was awful (again) and Petitti looks more and more like a rookie 6th rd pick every week... you simply cant help both guys out w/o seriously compromising what you can do in the passing game...the loss of Adams has been a crippling blow to this teams offense, because the downfield passing game is almost non existant since Adams was injured and its getting more noticeable every game...Bledsoe is getting creamed

2) more great Zimmer-ism on defense...rush 3 guys, drop 8 and STILL leave the other teams best offensive player totally unguarded 30+ yds downfield...for those who struggle with math, if you drop 8 guys you can almost double cover every receiver the other team has, but not only was Roy Williams WIDE OPEN, another guy was wide open about 7 or 8 yds downfield on the far sideline

3) we got 84 yds of offense on a nice opening game drive for a TD, then saw our offense basically manhandled for the next 3 1/2 quarters (around 160 yds of offense the remainder of the game)...this against a team missing half its defensive starters, and I'm pretty sure probowl DT Shaun Rogers was hurt in the first half and never returned either..if he did return, it wasnt for very many plays.. I recall seeing Cody (a rookie) and Wilkinson at DT almost exclusively after Rogers limped off

4) hopefully Cundiff kicks the remainder of the yr like he did today...that 56 yd bomb was awesome...other than the opening kickoff, his kicks were fairly deep as well...

5) I thought Roy Williams and Terrance Newman had very good games, and Aaron Glenn was fairly solid but otherwise nobody really impressed me much on defense...too bad they false started on Glenn's int for 6 though

6) offensively, I was glad to see Jones get some yds but the settling for the FG thing when we had 1st and goal inside the 1 was pure garbage...watching Parcells and Payton call basically the same 3 plays from the same formation with the exact same results was just horrendous...why do they insist on bunching everyone up in that tight short yardage offense when all yr they have struggled to make any yds in that formation? it makes it easier for the other team to defend unless your OL is really good, and ours is not...they need to run the regular offense and spread the other teams defense out as much as possible and THEN run it, as they did with Barber again today down inside the 10...

again, I am really glad we're 7-3 but I am disappointed that 10 games into the season that the pass rush has totally disappeared and the OL is getting worse...this is a team that has very good CB's and an all pro SS but otherwise is very ordinary...we dont pass well anymore because we cant pass protect and we dont run with any real consistency because it seems every other play or so is stopped for no gain or a loss...we cant rush the QB worth a lick, even when we know the other teams are going to pass...this was a game we should have won by 3 or 4 tds but didnt...had Detroit played one of the leagues better teams today and played the same way they did vs us, they'd have been blown out badly

I hope we win Thursday but really see little chance for victory.....Denver will be the best team we've faced all yr and they are playing extremely well right now...if we play the way we have vs Philly and Detroit we are going to get flat out embarrassed

You are what your record says you are

We are 7-3 and in the drivers seat for our division and a first round bye

I'll take 16 one point wins as long as they are wins

youre right dude, this team is not as good as their 7-3 record shows, and i think Denver is gonna kick the piss out the boys on thursday. it might be a good wake up call for them, IMO.

One thing about Harrington......If I remember correctly, he isn't sacked often. I remember as a rookie, he was one of the least sacked QBs in the NFL.

In all of the games I've watched of Detroit, Harrington does a good job of avoiding sacks.......usually, by throwing INTs.....

Of course, I could be wrong.

he had been sacked 19 times coming into today, Garcia had been sacked 2 times

I understand the frustration over the 'holes' and problems of the team. I agree with some, disagree with others, but that's not really important. The thing that stands out to me is all the holes and problems of the rest of the NFC. Those are the teams Dallas has to go through in the playoffs. I do hope this team find solutions to some things that could make this team that much better.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Chicago (6-1 conf rec) and Seattle (7-1 conf rec) are in the drivers seat for the byes.

I guess not, but do you honestly believe we'd have beaten a playoff team playing the way we did Monday night or today?

You have a good point and the fact we are winning says something.

What bothers me are the glaring mistakes being made which are being exploited by good teams.

The fact we have been competitive dispite the problems also says we are doing more things right than wrong and have learned to play well when we have to most of the time.

The holes are still there and I have raised my bar for the performance of this team. Of course I don't coach them so that doesn't matter but I suspect from what I see from Parcells is he's not real happy some times either.

I'd like this team to improve in some areas despite the record and winning streak. I want a team that plays at a championship level and I would like someone to give me a reason to believe we are at that level.

The spread between Dallas and the media-labeled elite teams in the NFC isn't much... if any. Seattle? Chicago? Atlanta? Carolina? All of those teams have just as many issues and questions as Dallas. I like the Cowboys chances.

We beat the Giants playing that way and nearly beat the Seahawks playing that way. Who knows, if we had Cundiff then, maybe we WOULD have beaten the Seahawks.

When we played the Giants, they were the highest scoring defense in the league.

They scored what, 13?

When we played the Seahawks, they were the highest scoring offense in the league (only because we held the Giants the week before).

They scored what, 13 or 14?

I'd say our defense isn't why we lose games this year, myself. I don't care if a team drives down to score points in the last 2 minutes - if you hold ANY team to 14 points or less and lose, it isn't your defense losing the game. Regardless of when those points are scored.
