ALLEN PARK, Mich. – To get a better sense of the franchise the Cowboys will be facing Sunday at AT&T Stadium, I got in touch with a popular Detroit sports talk radio host this week.

Mike Valenti, one half of the Valenti and Foster drive time show on 97.1 the Ticket [WXYT-FM], gave his no-holds-barred opinion of the team he discusses on a daily basis.
You’ll likely come away from this interview feeling very confident about the Cowboys chances of advancing Sunday

How would you describe this current Lions team?

Valenti: “Beyond frustrating. Lucky. I think they’ve had an incredible amount of good fortune this season, whether it be the miracle vs. New Orleans, Miami, Atlanta. Even at Green Bay, Rodgers goes down, takes the air out of the stadium. From an Xs and Os standpoint, the defense is going to try to take the run away and they do a really good job of it. They give up a lot of yards between the 20s and then they tighten up. They’re hard to score on. They just find ways, whether it’s creating turnovers, whether it’s a goal line stand like last week against Green Bay. They have a way of tightening the screws in the red zone, so they can be very frustrating to play. Offensively, they’re terrible. There’s really no other way to put it. They can’t run it with any consistency. They have a hard time protecting Stafford. And when you look at Stafford on his own accord, his accuracy is questionable at best. They got a couple of good weapons in Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate. But a number of personnel changes. They’re constantly running people in and out of the game. There’s no flow. They’re very disjointed offensively.”

His assessment of the Lions was so dismal, it almost sounds like a ruse: "Oh, we're horrible. We suck. Don't worry about us. You don't even need to practice to beat us. Just show up, and you'll win." <wink, wink>

Yes, Jerry's better than what Detroit's got, but hey, that's Detroit,,, we've got higher expectations around here.

Garrett deserves coach of the year honors for the simple fact that he minimized Jerry's gremlin tendencies enough to put together a real OL,,, even though it took way longer than necessary. That almost Manziel pick would have shot another giant hole in this team's boat. We've got enough holes already!

Seriously though, I think the Jones/Garrett combination might actually work long term...

I got the same vibe, but he wasn't talking to the players and coaches who are clearly too savvy to fall for nonsense like this. Besides, I like hearing negative stuff about the opposition. Tee hee hee.

Clearly the guy being interviewed is biased, and has low expectations for the current Detroit squad. Although I do agree with him on one point- that it's taken a decent amount of good fortune for them to get to 11 wins this year.

I said this in another thread- but just look at their schedule, closely. They are not that good of a team, bottom line. We are facing a team that has ONE impressive win this season, and it was a wk 3 home game against GB. They literally do not have any other big win that they can hang their hat on. They lost to every other good team that they've played, and have been particularly unimpressive on the road. And tomorrow's their 3rd consecutive road game.

There is no reason we shouldn't beat them.

Detroit has trouble sustaining drives; they've got the lowest 3rd down conversion rate of any playoff team and it hasn't been trending upward.

I can see why anyone would get frustrated watching an offense like that.

And he even left out the second Minnesota game.

He is right about their offense looking disjointed. Does not seem to be a sense they have bought in to Lombardi's rip off of the Saints offense.
