Fire Sale. I'm telling you, Detroit is like a Modern Day Gold Rush Town. It's all but panned out.

New tale of Detroit's woe: Pontiac Silverdome sold for $583,000

Pontiac, Mich., sold the 80,300-seat Silverdome for $583,000 Wednesday. The former home of the Detroit Lions cost $55.7 million to build in 1975.

By Mark Guarino, Staff Writer / November 18, 2009

Yeah... Saw that. For some reason it was just talked about on cbsfm 101 in new the other day. They were talking about how the state is just tanking into he abyss.

Silverdome to auction off literally everything
The [URL='http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/teams/page/DET/detroit-lions']Lions
haven't played in the Silverdome since 2001, but the indoor stadium still stands just north of Detroit, in Pontiac, Mich. Built in the 1970s and host to everything from the Bad Boy Pistons, the Barry Sanders Lions, Elvis and the Pope, the structure is now in disrepair. The roof is in tatters, and the elements are wreaking havoc on the once-domed stadium now exposed to the elements.

In an effort to get while the getting is still good, everything is up for sale.

From memorabilia -- "assorted signage and banners, boxing ring, Pistons scoreboard, flooring base, goal posts, locker rooms and fixtures, etc...," the auction website explains -- to run-of-the-mill miscellaneous items -- "mop buckets, fire extinguishers, wheel chair ramps, etc..."

"Every item starts at five dollars. If we don't get that, it goes in the garbage," Jim Passeno of RJM Auctions, which is handling the online auction, told the Associated Press.

I have a friend who spent around 40k and bought some blocks in downtown Detroit almost 5 years ago.. This is blocks, not a single block. He is gambling that at some point, he will make a fortune when the city starts to turn around. He is loaded and it was chump change for him. He figures to buy low and sell high, if that day ever comes.

Stadium cost $55 million to build. Sold for 500+k

Damn.

Not quite sure why everyone's so aghast? The Houston Astrodome is only 10 years older. Was right at 10 million cheaper, and their calling for it to be razed 'cus Houston tax payers just rejected a referendum to spend 217 million to "repurpose" it as a draw for conventions.

DMN: Escaping Astrodome?
