I've noticed over the past couple of years that WR's don't wear thigh pads. I have to think that the deep thigh bruise is a result of this. Do you think he plays with pads when he comes back?

It's a fashion statement actually, but he'd better find some type of protection to put up under there if he comes back.

Probably for the next couple of weeks. After that, he'll go back to thinking he's invincible.

Michael Irvin didn't wear thigh pads either.

It was a freak injury. Where he took the hit, the thigh pads wouldn't have even protected anyways so it's a moot point.

Kevlar maybe?

Yeah, I was thinking that the stuff they're making Romo's flack jacket out of would be perfect as thigh pads. Thin and flexible but protects very well.

It would've prevented Dez's thigh injury from happening.

It should be required like mouth pieces. Hell I heard Vick didn't wear his mouth piece last week. Teams that have players on the field without the proper equipment should be penalized.

Michael Vick got some specially made kevlar thigh pads last year from the same company that created his flack jacket.

Problem with thigh pads is really hit only helps with hits to the front of the thigh and not the side. I think that is where Dez got hit was on the side, but I could be wrong.

I believe Dez's injury is right above the knee. A thighpad would not have helped as it would have been protecting an area higher than that of what was injured.

Referee: Penalty!

Player: For what?

Referee: For being an adult and making your own choices!

I wonder if those pads don't sap some of your speed and quickness. Otherwise, why not wear them?

Vick often times plays with his mouthpiece still attached to his helmet.

It's hard to bark signals with it in and I'd imagine it's a little tough to breathe too. Especially for a guy like Vick who is constantly on the move.

Ewww no. If a player wants to be stupid, go ahead and let them. That sounds worse than seatbelt laws :laugh2:

Used to, they wore pads over the knees too, which of course would cover above the knee. If he would have been wearing those, it would have helped.

Just two pads per leg... one upper thigh, and one knee/lower thigh.

Exactly...

If you happen to get hit in between them when your leg is bent or something, that's just some very bad luck. But at least do all you can to prevent most of these types of injuries.

They need to be properly equipped. If they are to dumb to do it themselves penalize the team. It has nothing to do with choice, you wear the protective equipment issued to you because it is smart. If you are to dumb or your coach isn't able to control the team properly penalize them.

Knee pads and thigh pads are one thing but not enforcing wearing mouth pieces is ********. A large number of concussions are caused by your jaws slamming together. Mouth pieces help prevent that, if you wear one that covers your upper and lower jaw protection increases. If the NFL was serious about player safety this would be a no brainer.

Jerry Rice started it, everyone wants to be like Rice.

Rice wasn't the first WR or football player to do this. Pads are psychologically restricting. I can remember cutting away the padding so that only the shell remained to get a so called edge in speed and I played DL. This phenomena is rampant in the NFL and most college and high school players try to get away with it too.
