There were days when the NFL Draft wasn't a fear-inducing event for Cowboys fans, when they trusted the front office to make the right picks and watched them turn into major contributors.

Sports On Earth's Mike Tanier proved it on Thursday as he ranked the best drafts of the past decade. The Cowboys' 2005 class, one of the last under Bill Parcells, ranked No. 1.

Wow, i dont agree with it, but i dont have all the information in front of me. I think some of the other commenters made better arguments.

We got a lot of production out that draft. Some guys we couldn't justify keeping around as long as we would have liked. But that truly was a special draft. Ware alone is enough to make you smile about that draft.

Side note: Rob Pettiti... what the heck happened there?

Ware -- enough said
Ratliff -- Awesome until the last few years
Canty -- played very well before going leaving Dallas)
Spears -- never lived up to expectations, but had a long career
Barber -- Played well and exceeded expectations until the big contract came.
Burnett -- has stuck around and played OK as a Cowboy. Always seemed to battle injuries

The important thing to note is that everybody in that draft contributed, produced, and in some cases, excelled for the Cowboys.

It was a rare draft indeed.

It was a very good draft, and it's annoying how little the Cowboys the have to show for it in terms of playoff success.

You gotta string together a number of good drafts to get that playoff success. A good one followed by a number of stinkers really hurts.

I think a big part of that draft class success was the work ethic instilled in them their rookie training camp.

just did not have the foot speed to get it done. He had all the effort in the world but sometimes that does not matter.

This, BTW, was a draft full of guys Parcells saw as leaders. High character guys. Some don't look that way anymore but that was what they were in college

Maybe so, but Parcells wanted Spears over Ware.

In fact if they didn't trade down the year before, we could've had Steven Jackson instead of Julius Jones, at the mere cost of no Marcus Spears.

Parcells wasn't bad for the team, but I feel he is often given more credit than he deserves for his time here.

Sean Payton vouched for Tony Romo.... so really the best Defensive Player and Offensive Player we've had over the last few years had literally nothing to do with Parcells.

UGH! i still remember being so happy that SJ dropped to us only for it all to change to outrage at the trade down...

and agreed, parcells changed the culture of the team but he is given way too much credit especially when it comes to drafting.

Hard to disagree. You got two legit starters in the NFL in Burnett and Canty, 3 Pro Bowlers in Barber, Ware and Ratliff....Cowboys shouldn't have to live to those standards though. NOBODY hits on a draft like that consistently. As a matter of fact, I wonder how many teams this past decade can say they had a draft with as much success as that one had?

49ers 2007 : Patrick Willis, Joe Staley, Dashon Goldson, Terrell Brown, and Ray Mcdonald.

guys like you are so completely blind to what it took to change things at VR.

And much of what is known as regards the whole Ware/Spears thing comes from Broaddus who BP fired. So that is not exactly an unbiased source.

You do remmember BP taking a team with Q and Hambone and a few others like that and getting into the playoffs and going 10-6?

Maybe you need to brush up on Cowboys history a little more.
