Did anyone else just watch Nik Wallenda over Niagara Falls?

If people saw the colossal waste of money, manpower and the number of meetings that were had to organize this waste of time they would have never have let this guy do this.

They probably made a profit, I'm just assuming though.

It wasn't your money so would it matter?

I thought it pretty cool

How much of it came out of your pocket? Most people thought it was pretty cool.

I wish I knew what the hell people were talking about.

Nik Wallenda walked a tight rope across Niagra Falls last night. ABC carried it live.

It might have been more helpful if the thread title had included 'Niagara Falls' instead of 'Niagra'. ;)

Thread title fixed. :)

Yeah I happened across it by accident. Probably would not have watched had not Hannah Storm been cohosting it at the beginning. For 50 years old, she is HOT! :)

saw an interview with his mum yesterday, she wasn't happy that the sponsors had insisted on him wearing a safety harness as "it wouldn't feel natural and the extra weight could cause him to fall"

Yeah, he even commented on that during the walk. He didn't like it at all. Said he felt like a ******* wearing it.

Wallenda: It's been my life's dream to tightrope walk over Niagara Falls! Will you offset a portion of the million dollars needed to make it come true?
ABC: Sure. We love reality television, but we must ask that you take some precautions.
Wallenda: Like what?
ABC: Well, you are not omnipotent. You are highly skilled, but there is always the chance that you could fall to your death. We would not like being seen as the network which did not help prevent your death. Broadcasting your death for millions to see around the world would have negative repercussions.
Wallenda: Okay... What sort of precaution are you proposing?
ABC: Just a safety harness, that's all.
Wallenda: That's all? It may affect my balance and cause me to fall. Then my dream would be ruined.
ABC: That is very true, but do you believe it would prevent you from completing your walk?
Wallenda: No, but I do not want to wear it because it cause me to fail. I would not like to think of my ultimate dream as a failure.
ABC: You could be right, but you would be alive to regret your falling off the tightrope. And for us, that's good business. Do we have a deal?
Wallenda: Okay... deal.
ABC: Splendid! Here's your check.
Wallenda: Thanks. Will you mind if my family or I complain about your company mandating that I wear this harness which makes my walk harder, but could ultimately save my life?
ABC: No. People complain about us all the time. Just don't slander us, okay?
Wallenda: You bet. Thanks for the check with strings.
ABC: No problem. See you at the Falls!

I live in the local area where this event occurred. The stand by rescue teams that were offered up for the event are in my area. 376 "transportation aides" were hired and paid by the local area on the U.S. side alone. Tickets to the public for this event were free. Wallenda paid 200K to the U.S. and 115K to Canada to do this stunt. Those amounts did not come close to what it cost to prep the event, organize during, manage transportation and have rescue teams on stand by.

I'm sorry if I come off sounding bitter but I'm not happy about the use of resources when we are an area that already struggles with how we use our resources here to begin with.

Oh well. I'm sure there is another segment of your community that complians of other things as well. That's what elections are for. I thought it was great publicity for the communities and exhibited friendliness and cooperation between counties.

Yes, there are some pros to this as far as publicity to the area and cross border relations. I'm just more disheartened by the financial impact. The ironic thing was all the publicity by the news about how great it was...now, the local news is all "hey this was great, but at what cost." A lot of people here locally are starting to raise an eyebrow.

Nope. I heard about it and it brought me back to the days when they'd do TV Specials like David Copperfield and what not, so I liked the idea but I have zero interest in watching dare-devil type stuff, the hour they spend talking about an event that usually takes no more than 15 minutes is ridiculous.
