Did Cowboys Reach on Shemar James?

I think by the 5th round, you aren’t really looking for the 15th best LB by stack rank so much as finding traits that could turn into the better player over time. Plus, he has lots of ST exp that can be used early. I dont think any player is a reach once you get in the 150th pick range.
I mean, more than likely there was no need to trade up. And there was still some solid talent around when they did it.

I don't know. Bland was a 5th. Maybe James becomes the DaRon Bland of LBs.

I just see another Devin Harper.

Schottenheimer must have a plan for Shemar James, he is just 20 years old.He has time to put on weight ,he looks like a good blitzing Lb,and he's a solid tackler. On film he looks like he has a nose for the football.
Right.
There is a plan, and it is for a few years down the road, and for next year.

I think James was also coming off an injury. He will probably make the 53 man roster, but will be inactive for most games.
The plan is for 2026.

He was picked in the 5th so can’t really be a reach. Shotty knows him well so I’m guessing he spoke for him
He can if you've moved up and used other resources to get him
He's in the 5th round. Probability says he won't even make the 53.
Bet>? You don't move up for a guy if you're not going to keep him. I guarantee this is a Matt Eberflus pick... He feels like he's going to fit this deep ends he wanted him they moved up to get him and he's not being cut not this year I mean so you're saying every one of our 5th through 7th rounders are not making the team you're saying Jayden Blue is getting cut?

I didn't like to move either however one has to realize that if a coach moves up and gets him it must be a coach move this is not Jerry

jerry doesn't know who this guy is will mcclay didn't say hey let's go get this linebacker they already got a lot of linebackers in the offseason this was an absolute coach's choice and that means he makes the team there's going to be a guy like Buddy Johnson or Nick Vigil that are not going to make the team..book it

Right.

there's no way in Hell he gets cut from this team people keep saying that because he's a 5th round or no they moved up and used other resources to get him the coaches wanted this guy on the team he's on the team and he'll get 2 to 3 seasons to see if he can't fit as long as his coaching staff is here...

Somebody wanted him my guess is it's Matt Eberfleus because I agree with the original poster there's strange you could have got a better player and this guy probably would have dropped down to you but they were worried about him getting taken before they got him that means he's making this team.. And by the way he's built more like a strong safety and people keep saying to put weight on him maybe he will eventually get some weight on him but maybe they have a plan to use him like a hybrid safety slash linebacker in some sets so let's let this work itself out before everyone's got this grand plan for this guy everyone's saying he's going to be cut or he's going to be a plan for 2 or three years down the road how about we see how this works out..

I don't have a problem with James. That said, I really like Blue as well. My biggest issue with James is the cost they spent to go get him.

I kinda feel like drafting a guy like Devin Neal would have been a better choice.

Can someone sell me on James over a guy like Neal?
Why do we have to sell you on anything the dudes on the team now it's too late I agree there was a head scratcher to move up and get this guy he probably would have fell to them anyway however given the fact that somebody asked Jerry for this guy probably Matt Eberfleus meaning they see something in him that means he could fit their defense in some way in my opinion he's built more like a strong safety he's a hybrid linebacker and maybe they have a plan for him that will never know until we actually see it....

But yes at the time I was thinking *** why aren't we using it on one of the backs that were left and we could have got two backs late in the draft would have made more sense not getting one in the top three rounds so there's no selling anybody on anything somebody asked for this guy somebody was afraid of losing him and I'm guessing it was Matt Eberfleus...

If the coach wants a player that bad he must have something IMHO

I do believe the coaches fuel with the running backs when Sanders Williams Vaughn Hunter to go along with Mafa and blue I'm pretty sure they feel like they're set there for somebody to win this rotation and weren't worried about a guy like Devin Neal but you're right I probably would have done that but there's something we don't know about and I'm ready to let it play out.....

Lol

You may be right!
First of all, that's really stupid ,in fact you would agree with something so ridiculous, jerry doesn't make the decisions on draft day ,he has a board the board was developed by a group of guys mostly by Will Mcclay, and all the coaches..

apparently y'all don't pay attention they moved up for this guy for a reason had nothing to do with Jerry has more to do with probably Matt Eberflus, somebody wanted this guy and they didn't want to lose him,

I agree a better player might have been available and I agree I probably would have taken Devin Neal but we're not the coaching staff and we don't know what they have in mind for these players...

Here's a question and please don't lie again how do you know Devin Neal in the professional NFL is a better player than James and two how do you know he's a better player than Williams, Sanders,Mafah, Etc or even Jaydon Blue how do you know that this is something you saw in your brain says he would have been the better choice doesn't make him the better choice... You do know as well as I that the only way we judge drafts is about three years from now the people we passed on for people we picked will get to see who made a mistake and who didn't it happens on the field and it takes a few seasons...

I mean for all we know Jayden Blue could end up being the next Jamal Charles or you know the very much overlooked and under drafted Terrell Davis look he's built like that he is not built like a 3rd down back a **** back a receiving back people keep acting like he is but I'm saying none of us know we need to let this draft play out and we can discuss this down the road..

.

I'm betting a lot of you and please don't lie didn't know who Deron Bland was until he was somebody wanted him they picked him he turned out to be a great player in the 5th round how do we know that James won't do the same thing do we do? Again, please don't lie people around here think they know everything about the draft and every player in the draft they believe everything they read and I'm not saying I agree with the move but there hadn't been a good reason for it...

Scheme fit is how you end up with Taco Charlton instead of T.J.Watt.
You draft the best talent. Worry about scheme fit later.
Except teams always scream they are going to take the best player available. Taco Charlton was not the best player available. He wasn't even close. That was reaching for need, and it bit us in the butt, like it pretty much always does.

I made the comment when they drafted James, as others questioned it. Which is fine, I understand why.
Anyway I said that Darren Woodson was a LB and converted to S. How did that work out for us.

He knows him so that’s likely the case

But trading up when a guy like Neal was still available baffles me. Devin Neal and Blue would have been a great combo. I read somewhere that they were planning on drafting Neal but the Saints beat us to the punch so we drafted Mafah instead.

Not saying I don't like Mafah. But Neal is going to be at least decent to good..

I really like the Cornelius pick. I guess I'm just trying to get excited about James
It’s obvious they targeted him. Shorty is very familiar with him. He’s very young, very athletic and I think he was a guy they wanted I. The later rounds.

Eberflus runs a defense that requires 1 LB who is in the box, who reads and reacts and 1 LB who just goes with his hair on fire; you take this gap at the snap; you blitz this gap at the snap; you run with this guy if it's a pass.

The first LB mentioned is your Sanborn and Liafau.
The second LB mentioned is your Murray and James.

Both Murray and James have been criticized a little for their ability to play the traditional in the box LB who reads and reacts appropriately and quickly. But they are both perfect for the role of the LB that he fires into the offense with simple tasks....seek and destroy, go at the snap.

Yeah that's just my best guess, I mean his size says he's a tweener and he looks more like a strong safety and maybe those who think Donovan Wilson might be short for this team, a possible cut or trade, then maybe this guy's looked at as a strong safety by our coaching staff.

I'm just making a wild guess by his size but someone wanted him bad enough and anybody who keeps saying he's going to be cut because he's got picked in the 5th round did you ever hear about Deron bland??

I mean act like anybody who's not a top three round player is going to automatically be cut.. .

When they trade up it's pretty obvious they had the guy with a higher round grade and know other teams have shown interest.

I wish they would have traded up for Dre Greenlaw four years ago. They wanted him also in the 5th round and the 49ers beat them to the punch.

I've read they also wanted Devin Neal, and wanted to draft him round 6. But Kellen Moore got to him before us.

To me, that's a better pick and use of resources.
