I was watching the pregame show on ESPN, and Steve Young made an interesting point. He pointed out that he thinks Dak is nursing an injury, which, when Booger chimed in, made a lot of sense. Prior to his leg injury, Dak was playing miles better than he's been since. Let's look at the Giants game in October at Jerry world. Particularly, the strike Dak threw to CeeDee:
Let's dissect this pass. Notice the way he sets the protection, which he's still been doing. Watch his legs though as he throws the ball. Notice the way his legs are spaced when he is in the pocket and his hip action as he's driving the ball to Lamb.
Now to the pick 6:
Look at the legs here. Not set at all. His legs are not spaced at all like he did in the Giants example. The wrist is sort of lazily chucking the ball here. No where near the velocity he had on the other pass. Clearly a poor target, but I'm focusing on his legs here as he's throwing the ball. As you look closely on each pass, you'll notice there's a difference with the footwork. I think he's trying to who I think is the TE Schultz. Prior to the leg injury, he makes this completion in his sleep. Now, that leg isn't planting the way it should. He's not setting his feet properly, and the ball hasn't got near the zip or the distance it had prior to the injury as a result. This tells me that he's still dealing with an injury. Thus, it makes me wonder, did he come back to quickly? I wanted him back against the Broncos, but I am realising, with what Young was talking about, that I think Dak came back too quickly. He's not going to admit he's injured because that's not who he is. That said, it is clear to me that he is injured based on the comparisons.
The good news is that our lead in this division is large. We might be able to get that put away this weekend or next. We are not getting the 1 seed, so we won't get a bye. That said, the sooner we put away our group, the sooner we can pull Dak back a bit. I'd use the Eagles game as basically a bye week with Dak. Let him get another week to rest his leg. I shouldn't think we'll need him that week. Let him get the leg right. No need to use him when we don't need him with the postseason looming. We will need him then.
