Did Jerry and Jason already have a deal in place?

I'm pretty sure that was the plan since he was hired before Wade and made an assistant HC.

Informally? That's possible.

Jerry Jones has always been an aggressive dealmaker. He did seek out Jason Garrett's services before Wade Phillips. There could have been some discussion between Jones and Garrett that, after Phillips had fulfilled or exhausted hs opportunity to succeed as head coach, the torch would be passed to Garrett.

The motivation to do so could have been to instill unwritten assurances that he would still "get hs man" after Phillips' tenure had ended. Garrett has a rather lengthy personal connection with Jones, so Jones' "word" may have served as good enough.

I doubt that anything formally was ever finalized. Valley Ranch has a history of being a leaking boat when "confidential information" is involved. In my opinion, that story would have broken a long time ago. It would have caused a great deal of procedural friction between league management and Jones. It would also impaired Jones' ability to negotiate with future coaches as well. He is a gambler, but I'm not certain he would have been willing to take that type of extended risk.

Family portrait...

Like DE says, I doubt one was in writing. You wouldn't exactly want to enforce that in court anyway. But when JG came back from Atlanta and Baltimore to remain here, and Jerry hired Garrett's preference Houck instead of Solari (among others like Campo), I think it was pretty much a done deal.

I think so, didn't Jerry paid him as much as he was paying Wade.

Of course, I'm sure JG had those intentions when hired as the OC. Infact, I believe it was no secret either..

There was clearly nothing in Garrett's contract b/c we had to wait until we satisfied Rooney requirements (and please save your whining about the policy - that issue has been discussed to death here).

Informally? Sure. But I think the original plan -- well before even hiring Garrett was to have him learn under Parcells. Say what you want about Bill, but he develops coaches very well.

I'm pretty sure he was made Assistant HC after he got his big OC deal here. I am also pretty sure that in Garrett's first year, Sparano was the assistant HC

I hope so ...... I would love to think there was a long term plan in place.

I believe so. Why else would JG turn down head coaching offers from Atlanta and Baltimore? Think about it.

Because Jerry gave him the same amount of money to be OC.

I doubt that Jerry unconditionally told JC he would be the next HC. There was so little coaching on which to base that.

I will, however, repeat what I said at his initial hiring -- If Jerry wanted him long term he should have made him HC, surrounded him with veteran coordinators and let him grow into the job. Plain and simple.

I think it was pretty clear when they named him the OC and assistant HC that the plan, for Jerry, all along was to probably eventually make him the HC here.

I don't think so considering he went on a league tour when he was the Wunderkind and almost took the job with the Rams before losing it to Spagnuolo.

However, both probably knew it was inevitable that once Wade left, he'd have this job, even if they never discussed it.

Jerry kept on showering him with gifts whenever another dude stopped on the street to check out Garrett's cleavage, so Garrett probably knew Jerry would put a ring on it sooner or later.

Don't care what the deal was, but glad he is the HC.

Myself and he went out and hired his assistant coaches and DC. Jimmy Johnson mentioned it last year that there is a big trust factor with Jerry and Jason.
