First, here is the clip where jerry jones says what he says about 10 to 11 players.

Again, we feel good about the system we're in right now and have got some guys under contract. But it wouldn't surprise me to have 10 or 11 new faces on our team.''

Jones had this and more to say as he sat on his bus at the scouting combine in Indianapolis and met with a small group of reporters for more than 50 minutes. Jones sees himself as an agent of change this off-season, and he vows there will be changes.

We'll have more soon.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last year, in our mock drafts, i had the cowboys picking anywhere from 11 to 13 players in the draft, but most of you remember DC and hostile i believe told me no way. Yet, the cowboys drafted 12 players.

Is this anothe r hint to the cowboys trading down some to pick up some other draft picks and to get some more players?

If you our 6 draft picks (I think we only have 6) add just one or two FA's and add in Brandon Williams, Hodge and the OL guy that were all missed last year that would be 11 "new" faces.

Remember, Jerry talking about in essence having a draft and a half this year?

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wants his players nervous

Jerry Jones wants everyone to know he's not comfortable. The Cowboys owner doesn't view last season as a rousing success.

He sees a team that should have advanced deeper than it did in the playoffs given it had so few injuries. He sees a team that lost 34-3 to Minnesota in the second round.

Remember how fingers were being pointed after the Cowboys ended the 2008 season with a 44-6 loss to Philadelphia?

"I want some of that right now,'' Jones said. "I want some people nervous. I want our players nervous.

"After the Minnesota game, we weren't close enough and good enough for anybody to get comfortable about where we are. If that thing had been taken away from us at the last second or we had played at a high level there, but we didn't. We've got to do something to change that.

"Again, we feel good about the system we're in right now and have got some guys under contract.

I can't wait to see Brandon Williams on the field again. I am a little worried about Hodge and his knee. He was an excellent S/LB hybrid (they run a 4-2-5) at TCU and a standout ST'er. Wade gushed about both these guys making an immediate impact before they got hurt IIRC. Robert Brewster is an unknown but he at least had time to improve his overall physique.

Could this be the end of Cory Proctor????

I could see this being as a true statement because there will be ALOT of competition during training camp. Pretty much bottom half of the roster is gonna get churned this year. Should be pretty interesting this summer. We should be able to come out of TC with some quality depth.

Just CHILL: Jerry Jones says players should be nervous as changes are coming but not at receiver with Roy Williams

Clarence Hill

Just talked to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and I'm working on a full story but here are the headlines.

Jones said the Cowboys would be mistaken to think their playoff win means they are getting close to the top. He said the blowout loss to Minnesota means they have a long way to go.

So he wants them as scared, uncomfortable and nervous going into the offseason as they were last year and thus said personnel changes are coming.
He said especially look for changes on the offensive line, defensive line and possibly safety.

Of course he also all but guaranteed a starter job for receiver Roy Williams.
As far as the draft is concerned, he said the Cowboys will target every position for their first round pick except for quarterback.

TCU's Newhouse kicks into overdrive
TCU offensive tackle Marshall Newhouse registered the third fastest time in the 40-yard dash at the NFL combine today. Newhouse ran a 5.00 to place behind only Maryland's Bruce Campbell and Oklahoma's Trent Williams.

It's easy to see why the Cowboys like Campbell so much. Not only is he 6-6 1/2, 314 with little or no body fat but he's also fast. Campbell ran a 4.85 while Williams ran a 4.88.

Williams is expected to be drafted in the first 10 picks while Campbell is a mid-to-late first round pick. Newhouse was projected as a fifth or sixth round pick, but could move up with the excellent 40 time.

Jones predicts 10 or 11 new CowboysEmail Print Comments 4By Tim MacMahon

INDIANAPOLIS -- Dallas Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones vowed Sunday that there will be significant changes despite his franchise ending a 12-season playoff win drought.

While sitting on his luxury bus outside Lucas Oil Stadium at the NFL scouting combine, Jones emphasized that he would not allow the Cowboys to become complacent. He predicted that next season's roster could feature 10 or 11 new players and stressed the need for competition for playing time.

Final Eight Plan
The Cowboys and other teams that reached the divisional round of the playoffs are restricted in free agency by the Final Eight Plan. Here is the NFL's explanation of the limitations:

During the Final League Year, the eight clubs that make the Divisional Playoffs in the previous season have additional restrictions that limit their ability to sign unrestricted free agents from other clubs. In general, the four clubs participating in the championship games are limited in the number of free agents that they may sign; the limit is determined by the number of their own free agents signing with other clubs. They cannot sign any UFAs unless one of theirs is signed by another team.

For the four clubs that lost in the Divisional Playoffs, in addition to having the ability to sign free agents based on the number of their own free agents signing with other clubs, they may also sign players based on specific financial parameters. Those four only will be permitted to sign one unrestricted free agent for $5.5 million (estimated) or more in year one of the contract, plus the number of their UFAs who sign with another team. They also can sign any unrestricted free agents for less than $3.7 (estimated) million in year one of the contract with limitations on the per year increases.

In the case of all final eight teams, the first year salary of UFAs they sign to replace those lost cannot exceed the first year salary of the player lost with limitations on the per year increases.

"We're not caught up in the fact that by some definition we had a good season," said Jones, whose team won the NFC East with an 11-5 record and advanced to the second round of the playoffs. "We did plan ahead and get some of our key players under contract. But in the NFL, there has got to be change.

"One of the biggest challenges I've got in my role here is to be an agent of change this year. We have got to look for ways to make changes. That's personnel."

Among the rules instituted for the upcoming uncapped season is the Final Eight Plan, which limits the Cowboys -- and other teams that reached the divisional round of the playoffs -- in their ability to sign unrestricted free agents.

Executive vice president Stephen Jones said earlier in the week that the Cowboys, whose only unrestricted free agent is reserve offensive guard Montrae Holland, would be opportunistic but would likely wait for the market to settle after the March 5 opening of free agency.

However, Jerry Jones indicated that the Cowboys need to upgrade several positions -- through free agency, the draft or internal competition -- to become a legitimate Super Bowl contender. The league-imposed financial restrictions would not prevent the Cowboys from accomplishing their offseason goals, he said.

"Without getting into the details of it, we can operate within the budget we have with the Cowboys," Jones said. "We do have a budget. We can operate within that budget and do whatever we want to do."

When Jones gave coach Wade Phillips a two-year contract extension the week after the Cowboys' season ended, he stressed the need for continuity, as Jones did when explaining his decision to retain Phillips after a disappointing 2008 season that ended with a 44-6 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles with a playoff berth on the line.

On Sunday, Jones said that his desire for continuity doesn't mean that the roster won't undergo significant changes. He cited offensive line as a focal point.

"Vivid in my mind is the Minnesota game," Jones said, referring to the Cowboys' 34-3 loss to the Vikings in the divisional round of the playoffs. "I want to have the taste in my mouth that we had when we left Philadelphia the year before. I'm thinking positively, but I'm thinking that we have a lot of work to do."

Jones did not deny that a pair of high-priced veterans, offensive tackle Flozell Adams and free safety Ken Hamlin, are among the players who might be released this offseason. Adams and Hamlin have young backups in Doug Free and Alan Ball, respectively, who performed well in stints as starters last season. However, Jones said he would not make any moves for the purpose of saving money.

"It'll be based on skill and based on where they fit this year and where they fit the next few years," Jones said.

When Phillips spoke to reporters this week, he said that the theme of the Cowboys' offseason would be avoiding complacency. Jones hammered home that point Sunday.

"Last year, it was not any fun in the offseason," Jones said. "Everybody was pointing fingers. We were pointing fingers.

"I want some of that right now. I want some people nervous. I want our players nervous."

NE has been able to run a well-oiled franchise by this method. Last year they had 3 or 4 second round picks because they know how to manage finances and don't cave in to players that want more $$ than they are worth.

i hope not man, outside of buehler who is one missed FG away in week 1 from losing his Deity status amongst the fair weathered ones. The rest of last years class was a huge disappointment on draft day and in terms of rookie impact. Now I'm not saying some of those other guy's wont be players down the road because it's early but we got too cute with the trade downs and went with quantity over quality.

Personally i would rather trade up if a guy like Iupati is still on the board at 23 or something then sit back and wait and get stuck with a lesser OL prospect . We don't need to be as aggressive in trading up like the Jets last year only having 3 picks but still 2 of those 3 picks sanchez and greene made massive rookie impact and look like they will anchor that team for years to come . Guess what im saying is it's not plug and play , or system all the time. it's talent i think alot of media and fans take it for granted sometimes . and i'd take 2 or 3 potential/high end studs over another 10 or 11 role players every time.

besides what system do we have anyway? offensively we have like 3 plays :D

Probably a trade and a FA signing to go with our draft. That`s 10 new faces easily when you add in some of our injured draft picks from last year.
