I will begin by stating the obvious and making it known that in no way, shape, or form do I expect this type of offseason activity to REALISTICALLY happen. This was, more than anything just me playing around and having a little fun while at the same time gaining a better understanding of our potential salary cap situation.

That being said, I was markedly astonished at the sheer amount of strength & ability our front office will possess this off-season to.literally do whatever they want. Just look at the numbers from my highly exaggerated mock off-season above, numbers that, mind you, were attained WITHOUT Brandon Carr even taking a pay cut/getting cut.

To sum it all up, I think it's obvious that the FO won't go after Suh, JPP, and/or any other guys requiring contracts paying over 10 mil a year. It just isn't Jason Garrett's way aka The Cowboy Way anymore and I'm more than OK with that. However, while I'm fairly certain we retain all our own FA's imperative to team success, I really hope the FO isn't under-appreciating Murray and he is offered a fair enough deal relative to the other top backs, something along the lines of 6-8 mil a year for 5-6 yrs with 20-30% guaranteed perhaps?

Very glad that I decided to finally go ahead and do one of these free agency simulations after hearing so many great things about it via this board and others. It's very simple and has proven to be extremely accurate in terms of each Team's Cap & contract configurations. I suggest others out there who like this type of **** to give it a shot, definitely worth the time.

I love messing around with these tools. It gives you a great idea of how much room they actually have under the cap. I came to the same conclusion as you did concerning Suh and JPP. While I would love to have either, it doesn't seem like the FO wants to go that way. That leaves more than enough room for Dez and Murray.

Here is another fun tool:

Thanks for doing these calculations. I think you're right though, they're won't be any big name signings. There will be more Minceys and Terrell McClains signed in order to fill holes and they will continue to build through the draft. This is the ideal strategy for any team in my opinion. It is good to know that there is a little wiggle room.

I do appreciate your effort and thoughts but a little different on the Murray issue.
After getting more familiar with Gurley and if he dropped to 27 man I think I'd take
him. His been called the most gifted runner in the past decade? There's been some
damn good RB's the last ten years [AP]. If he doesn't fall we can get another good R$B
later.

Just curious, how does the second year of the simulator look? Is it realistic, or is everything back loaded?

To me Dez, Murray, and suh salaries are bit unrealistic... unless the salaries after the first year increase, by like 2-4 million a piece.

I think if Dez could be signed for 8.9 and Murray for 5.2 it would have happened by now...

Would have to be. Next year we'd be fine, but we'd be royally screwed through 2020

The 2015 cap is not the limiting factor for the Cowboys. The limiting factors are the following years. The simulator would have to simulate 5 years to be realistic.

I assume that you know that Dez will get an average of somewhere around 12M to 14M. With a cap hit of 8.9M that's 3M to 5M pushed into the future. Suh will likely get paid 12M to 16M so with a cap hit of 7M that's 5M to 9M pushed into the future.

Good OP but I would nitpick the numbers. Suh will be way more expensive, and DeMarco will make more than that unless we add a lot of incentives to the deal. I'd love to see him back though.

I don't think McClain gets 3MM and Doug Free isn't going to take a one million dollar pay cut. The thread is right on the mark however, Dallas will be spending real money this offseason.

I hate the idea of using a first round pick on a TB when we have more pressing needs on defense.

We had to cut a player that got 20 million guaranteed within 24 hours of his release this past offseason. That's not doing whatever we want.

You missed the part about they can do whatever they want in 2015. There would be consequences in future years and those future years are the deciding factor.

I could buy a Ferrari but then I could never retire.

Cutting Ware was a value proposition. They didn't expect to be a contender in 2014 so they decided to save money for future years. Also, there was a high probability that Ware would have injury issues. If they were certain that Ware could be the good and healthy version of himself for 2 or 3 more years then he would still be here.

They could sign a guy like Suh for what Ware was originally scheduled to make this year. If you add in the 12M they saved from not paying him last year it's even better.

Cutting Ware was a sign that the Cowboys are moving in the direction of making good football decisions instead of the past where Jerry paid guys for what they did in previous years.

I don't think that cutting Ware in 2014 was the wrong move. But I think the reason that they had to do so was based on a series of bad moves over the years that were "solved" by DeMarcus Ware contract restructures. The dead money from Roy Williams, Marion Barber, Jay Ratliff, and Terrance Newman over prior seasons led Dallas to have to kick the can down the road with Ware. None of the 8.571 in dead money from Ware's contract was part of the original deal in 2009 as it all came from restructures down to the league minimum in 2011, 2012, and 2013. His original 2014 deal wasn't financially prudent, but if they hadn't pushed so much money over the years I think they could have got a deal similar to Denver's offer completed.

Those are the cap hits, not the salary. The first year is always the lowest because of the signing bonus.

If Suh gets a 30m signing bonus he could easily have a 1st year cap hit of under 8m. Same with JPP.
