Did the Cowboys overpay for Porter?

If he comes in and changes the face of the defense then easily worth it. However, I have a hard time believing that a CB, even a good one like Porter (whom I actually liked a lot going back to his draft) will move the needle for our D. Especially with the rules the way they are. If he comes in a picks on some passes and alters some games then he will have been worth it. For now I think it was a bad, typical overreaction and a 1990s perception of the impact a top CB on a game move by Jerry. But i sincerely hope I’m wrong.
Same here.

Did I read that right, a 2028 2nd round pick? The consensus is they overpaid because they don't believe Porter is a top tier CB. What top tier CB is being traded for a 2nd round pick two years from now?
The gist of what I saw a lot of yesterday is he's good not top tier, and the contract situation. This is part of the article that seemed to be making the rounds yesterday:

"Many around the league believed Dallas overpaid, based largely on the belief that teams don’t view Porter as a top-tier corner. The Cowboys have a strong recent history of overpaying for talent: a fourth for Trey Lance, a fourth for receiver Jonathan Mingo, a fifth for Joe Milton, a fourth for Rashan Gary.

“They were bidding against themselves for Porter,” says one executive with a team that was erroneously tied to trading for the cornerback. "

Bottom line, Porter is a press man corner in a league that plays zone 75% of the time.

Not according to NFL analysts who generally rank him around 15-20. ESPN left him off the top 10 CBs list. PFF ranks him 36th among CBs.

Porter was a 2nd round pick, so he will be a FA after this year. Are you saying we should franchise him? That would prolly cost us Pickens, you OK w/ that?
He's a solid cornerback K.........IF he can repeat 2025 numbers, yes, I would be perfectly fine tagging him.
BTW......we could also do a transitional tag........let the market decide value and give us first right of refusal.

Yes, he's solid. But, to repeat the question, do you want Porter or Pickens?

We didn’t give up a 2 for a 14 game rental, he will be resigned

I'm not sure it matters coz Stephen Jones has literally said we ARE NOT keeping TWO WRs on top long-term contracts ( I believe his exact words were 'it would be a challenge'). That tells me either Pickens or Lamb WILL NOT return in 2027.

Unless Jethro is truly All In on this season.

We’ll see how difficult he is to resign. It’s why Steelers dealt him and he’s been sitting.

Now he’s playing for a contract. And if this season fizzles out then Franchise Tag might be as good as it gets. That’s assuming we choose him over Pickens.

If this season tanks I don’t think this coaching staff stays in tact and all bets are off on resigning any of them.

Transitional tag is still the average of the top 10 paid CBs. Still prolly cost us Pickens.
K......here's Stephen Jones comments regarding Pickens AND Lamb

https://www.nfl.com/news/cowboys-st...an-pay-two-receivers-at-the-top-of-the-market

"I don't know of any teams that really can pay two top receivers top of the market, so that's gonna be a real difficult situation as we move forward," he said. "We've managed to figure out how we can do it for this year. If everything works out the way we think it is, [in] which CeeDee and George both have huge years again, then it'll be a bigger challenge next year.”

Here's the kicker. He turned down 27 mil/season from the Steelers and is a UFA after this season. You sure we didn't overpay?

Guys who are coming up for contract are available for mid round picks all the time, often very good players.

And think about this. What do we need? LBs and maybe edge rushers, right? We pay Porter and all that goes out the window. Did we overpay for a 14 game rental?
We let Gary go and we have his replacement in house already. Decisions can be made on Clark as well. Meaning Porter can be paid.

“Many around the league believe…” = “I have no actual news but I want to say something that stirs engagement”

Hes a top 10 cover corner.

He is not a ball Hawk.

A second in 2028 is the equivalent of a 3rd in 2027 per draft trading charts.

If he isn't extended they likely pick up a 3 for a compensatory pick.

This is stupid.
:hammer:
Not sure why everyone is thinking it's him or Pickens .............it appears they have already decided one WR will not return in 2027.

because one is redundant, Lambs great, can't pay 2 WRS top 5 money, up to George and David to not price themselves out of Dallas... don't need GP as much as a replacement for the failed Diggs and Bland, obvious choice if there is one is trade GP keep JPS if he has good year here or he's Brandon Carr 2.0(solid but not worth market money) and maybe you take the 3rd comp pick trade gP for first in a great draft pool, and go get those in the draft.
