I don't know what the going rate would've been last year for Zack MArtin but it had to be significantly lower then it is now.

He's about to get a ridiculous pay day and I admit that even though he is a great player i'm not in love with the idea of paying an offensive guard the type of money he is about to get.

Andrew Norwell, a guard, will sign with the JAguars for 5 years at 66.5 million & 30 mill guaranteed. I imagine Martin's deal will be much more then that.

Also, do you think the best strategy to get a player cheaper is to get a guy signed ASAP if you know he can play instead of waiting?

I would not be stunned if they took an OG like Hernandez or Wynn at 19 and then let Martin walk after this season. Then they will plug the open RG spot with someone else.

Did the Cowboys mess up? No
Did Zach Martin do exactly what he should have done to maximize his money? Yes

Exactly, unless Martin's agent was a complete moron, He'd have held off on contract talks, knowing that the market price would only increase after free agency.

The money did not go up significantly. Zeitler got 5/60mm with 31.5MM in guarantees last year. Everyone figured Martin would be upper 12 to 13MM AAV.

Pretty sure I remember reading last year that Martin said he wasn't going to give any discounts to us.
Hedged his bets in staying healthy and now he'll make more money signing this year than if he signed last year

If you mean messed up by not getting him cheaper than what we may have after the Jags OG was signed...I would say yes. We "may" have signed him cheaper than now...but you never know.

It will be more than Norwell got...but not much more. 5/70 with 35 guaranteed or something along those lines. Which is a ridiculous amount for a guard, but at this point what’s the difference? Not like we’d use that $ to sign anyone else...might as well just back the truck up for Martin

No. The Jags always pay and you could always use the franchise tag once or twice if you lock up Lawrence after this year. It's not the worst thing that happened. I always hated paying players with 2 years left on their deal. I could understand an extension now but last year is a little too early.

Yup, once the season started and He'd not signed, it was obvious He'd be waiting till free agency started and the new market price had been set, He'll get His deal before TC starts, it'll be a biggie.

I can't see a chance that they would let Martin walk. I see it as a foregone conclusion that he will be paid, and paid well.

He's one of your cornerstone players and has been since day one.

I don't believe that it was entirely the Cowboys' decision. Martin and his agent aren't stupid and they saw how the market for guards has gone up and up and up. I'm sure they had their asking price, and I'm sure it was already well above what Zeitler and Norwell got. And it should be. Martin is head and shoulders above both.

Much like Demarcus Lawrence, they know they're in positions of leverage and they have agents who know it too.

With the cap constantly rising, #1 at any position will be looking to break the bank and you need to sign those guys early especially if they are young.

I've been saying this basic concept for a while & getting roundly boo'd. I don't know how you break they cycle otherwise. You can't pay all your linemen top dollar. But rather than let him walk, why not trade him? Draft multiple linemen or draft 1 high & pick up another in FA. When you are comfortable, trade him for a boatload.

This team has more than their share of stupid going around. That said, are the stupid enough to let the best G in the game walk? Trade him if that is the plan. BTW Hernandez is not even in the same universe as Martin.

Hernandez will be there in the early 2nd.

It was Zack and his agent who decided to wait it out. They gambled on the market rising and it did.

All these big deals get eclipsed and look reasonable 2-3 years down the road so there really is no reason to sweat it
