Many here have hit on it. In Marinelli's the RDE is split out wider outside the OT and so speed around the edge is nice to have. At LDE size is more important (since you're closer to the middle of the offense).
RDE and LDE can also be talked about in terms of weakside DE and Strongside DE, respectively. That originates from the position of the inline TE. Most offenses have historically been right-handed, meaning they line the TE up on the right side of their formation (making it the strongside), which dictates that the SDE (the bigger stronger DE) will be on the left side of the defense with the WDE (the smaller faster DE) opposite on the right side. The bigger guy (SDE) has to fight off the potential double team of the OT and the TE. The smaller, faster guy doesn't have to.
Very simplistic view but it is kind of how I thought about it in the beginning.
