Difficult Neighbors

So I have a new neighbor behind my house. 3:30 am last night and my house was still shaking from the music. I was exhausted. Had a surgery and cancer treatment on Thursday.

My wife begged me not to go, but the dogs were freaking out and we all needed some rest. I went over and shut it down. Right or wrong?

Do I become the good neighbor and take them a bottle of wine today and explain the unwritten rules of the neighborhood?

I am friends with 3 sheriff's in my neighborhood, but I knew they had illegal substances going on and didn't want to involve law enforcement.

Fyi... this is a very nice gated community.

I've been there, and you handled it with more grace than I did. I wouldn't bring them any gift, other than to let them know that there are 3 sheriffs in the neighborhood, and that they don't want to risk someone calling the cops on them.

You were absolutely right. Loud music at 3:30 am is ridiculous and an unfortunate sign of how clueless your new neighbor is. I personally would not be bringing them a bottle of wine but I understand the desire to keep it friendly with the neighbors. Sorry to hear about the cancer. Get well soon!

Appreciate the good vibes. We really never talk about the C-word. They took a chunk out of my neck (on my spine) and right leg. Some stupid drip for 3 hours. Turns out, I should be just fine. 3-5 more treatments and I will be clear. Never had a doubt it would turn out well.

Not so sure about the new neighbors.

With my neighbor it was fireworks at 11:30 at night. The husband was very understanding (or nervous) but the wife couldn't understand why I was asking them to stop, just because I had to be up in 3 and a half hours to drive a truck loaded with about 25,000 pounds of lumber to NYC.
"It's the 4th of July!"
"No, it's the 1st of July, and it's Wednesday."

I had neighbors who started with the fireworks as soon as the stands go up in late June and didn't stop until their stash was gone, about mid July. It was obnoxious, but I live in town where I'm sure 20 other households could hear them and AFAIK no one else complained so I didn't either. Thank gawd they moved (after 4 years of this, but still . . .).

If OP has other neighbors close enough to hear the early morning party, sound them out the next time you see them. If it bothers them too, maybe you can agree on a joint plan. If the offenders know most of the neighbors are bothered and you don't do anything to make them dig in their heels and decide to harass you, maybe they'll try to fit in to the 'hood a little better.

I am sorry to hear about your cancer. Hope you get better soon. I think you did the right thing. Now if they were a jerk about it then you should take action. I had a neighbor once who was loud and when I went over to explain to him that I had twins that were trying to sleep and they get up early, he just shrugged me off. I told him you don’t want me to come over here when they get up and disturb your sleep. Basically told me to screw myself. Next morning I ranged his doorbell and knocked on the door when my kids got up. It was like 5:30AM. He was not pleased. Some of my other neighbors complained about it and I told what I did. He had another party that went into the night and was loud. About 6 different neighbors went over to his house early starting at 5 to wake him up every hour. He got the picture.

Get well!! We had some neighbors up the street years back that belonged to a Diana Ross tribute band. They had lots of partys and played good music. It was far enough away I would open the window when we went to sleep. When they practiced, I would go out on the porch a listen a lot of times.

Anyway, back to your Delima. I don't blame you. If you try and make nice and it don't work, then that will make you feel better when you have to call the cops..

Years ago when I was still in college, I was awoken by some jackass mowing his yard at 6 AM. I threw an egg at him and he stopped. However, since then I've realized there are more mature ways to deal with a situation like that. You handled your situation way better.

If they were outside, I would have brought the dogs in to stop the barking. Were they playing music inside or outside? Seems strange to have music playing outside at 3.

If it doesn't happen often, I would let it go. What if they work nights and sleep days. They might be celebrating something on a saturday night during their awake hours. Ask them nicely to keep it in doors

If they are all adults, no children around, and not selling anything illegal out of their house, never call the authorities. Domestic violence or something like that is fine to call the cops

New neighbors just need some training. They were outside. They have been here two weeks. Two weeks of the same nonsense. I am not a prude. I am a driveway guy that drinks beers and bourbon with my buds. We are also more mature and know when to shut the heck up. My cop buddy two doors down texted me asking if reinforcements were needed. All at 3:30am.

Did you get mad at your cop buddy for texting you at 3:30? Loud music outside that late is not cool, but hanging with people in the new backyard, drinking late, is enjoyable. Especially if there is a fire this time of year.

I don't know your setup, property layout, and how sound proof your house is, but a lot of the world lives in apartments, and hears everything from 4 directions. Part of the world has a lot of land, and hears nothing from their neighbors. It sounds like you are in between.

" Me and my cop buddies in the neighborhood, calling the cops, training" sounds pretty lame.

I worked at a job for a long time where I wore little earplugs. They would get you a full night sleep. It sucks to have to use them like that, but it is what it is.

4000 square foot house in a gated community. Not trying to sound snobby. Again, beer and bourbon guy in the driveway with any that happen to come by. We also shut it down by a certain time because we are adults.

You don't sound snobby, but you might have invested wrong. Maybe you should have gone for more land in the country.

I would enjoy both beer and bourban in the driveway, and late nights with friends in the backyard.

I doubt it would be hard to get someone to stop playing music outside at 3, but you might have to listen to some laughter, etc.

My personal opinion though, don't get people arrested, locked up, and many other possible life changing problems out of spite because their move in was badly timed with your health issues.

That is all I have though. I hope it works out for both of you. If it removes the stress and helps the healing, go stay with friends or family, or in an extended stay type of hotel for a few weeks. Might not be worth thinking about until you have recovered

Sorry to hear about your health issues.

Great to hear you taking the high road....short term
I fully and completely understand if you go after them if they ignore you though.
3:30 in the morning--in a gated community--on any day other than New Years is completely preposterous

I'm sure there are noise ordinances in place, and there's a reason for that. I don't care where you live, if you're keeping your neighbors awake after 10 p.m., with the possible exception of a holiday, you're a dick.

Usually, when someone speaks of a gated community, each house has about a half acre at most.

I wouldn't play loud music outside anywhere late night. On a racnch, or maybe at a campsite. But I doubt the shaking the neighbors house with half acre lots, or you will have a whole neighborhood coming down on you.

Then the law enforcement buddies, and training the neighbors, and etc, makes me wonder, getting people locked up for possible "illegal substances" out of spite. His original post only mentioned last night, and taking a bottle of wine. Then he says it has been going on for weeks. Sounds like a dude who doesn't feel well lashing out. I don't know the neighbors though, and I wasn't there. I do believe he could hear them though.

Back yards with friends after 3 is not unreasonable, and I will agree if they don't tone it down they are *****.

Agree... I took the nice approach, right up till they wanted to fight me. Walked away. I know my neighbors. A few weeks ago we rented an RV and lived at the Daytona Speedway for Rockville. Headliner was Metallica. Ton of fun.

Live and let live.

I bet it was. I went to texas motor speedway 6 or 7 years ago. Late one nights, 3 rv's down, I watched a guy get the worst head butt i have ever seen, crumple up, and lay in the middle of the road. 3 or 4 minutes later when he started to stand up, a different guy came and knocked him out.

The police came, and it turned out he had punched a woman in the face. It was a fun weekend.
