I'm usually more in favor of substance over style and deep, but melodic lyrics over catchy instrumental work...but ZZ Top for me here.

Don't get me wrong, ZZ Top...extremely talented musicians and that's why I prefer them over the Dire Straits. But, IMO two very different bands. Immensely enjoy both of them.

I found one of these

I loved this video when I was a kid. I totally wanted to wear the high heels with the ruffled socks! :D

However, I think I'd probably have to go with Dire Straits.

I don't get the point of comparison. Different styles of music, different everything other than portions of their careers overlapped, which can be said of a heck of a lot of bands.

But ZZ wins - longer lifespan, more songs that are recognizeable, greater body of work overall. Some of the younger people on here may not be as aware of their Pre-MTV, Pre-long beard work, but that was their best work. Geting away from some of the more commercial work is a big treat as well - a lot of great blues stuff.

ZZ Top, but I'd actually give the 80s to Dire Straits and everything else to ZZ. I can't stand Eliminator and Afterburner.

I'm going to see ZZ Top and Skynyrd in May up here in Bangor. Pretty stoked. It'll be the first time I've seen either of them live.

ZZ for me....how cool is to have two bearded guys up front, and a drummer who has no beard, but his last name is Beard?
