O.K. So, I'm getting to the point to where I'm going to get Direct TV just to watch the Cowboy games. I'm just a college student that gets financial aid, so kinda strapped for cash all the time. I seen a topic on here a while back about this. You all where getting really good deals from your providers. My question is, how were you guys (and gals) getting those deal? Like what did you tell them....etc! Thanks!

I think most of us were already existing customers - and obviously they are very interested in retaining their existing customers. If I was a new customer, I'd probably just call up and tell them that the only reason you want their service is for the sunday ticket, but you just can't afford it - and ask them if there's anything they can do for you. They may give you some real good promotional offers, they may spread the cost of the ticket out further, something.

Along the same lines of MetaliChris' issue.. I would love to get DirecTv, however my high speed internet, cable and digital phone service are all thru Time Warner. I'm not really ready to switch everything for something that I really only want for football season. When I contacted DirecTv, they indicated that its a yearly contract and if I were to cancel after the football season I would be assessed 8 months of penalty for the months that aren't in the football season... That makes it a deal breaker for me.

Are there any work arounds for this? Someone mentioned buying it from BestBuy or something? Does anyone know for a fact that if I were to go that or thru a similar store that I would not be charged that penalty for not having it for a full year?

Does not matter where you get it- the programing deal is from Directv so you will get nailed if you bail early.

All you would replace is your cable, right? Everything else can remain through Tme Warner.

Directv new customers will get the premiere package for free for 4 months, when they subsribe to the Sunday Ticket. After the 4 months downgrade your package to plus. Also ask if you can get the Sunday ticket payments spread out to 5 or 6 payments.

I have been a subscriber for a few years (already met my contract requirement), and I simply activate my service in the fall when I am ready to start Sunday Ticket. I have to pay for programming while I have ST, but after week 17 (week 16 last year because the last Dallas played on ESPN in week 17) I suspend my subscription with no penalties.

My box failed at the beginning of last season, and I borrowed a box from a friend who had canceled DTV after a few years. I was able to convince DTV not to force me into a contract since the contract requirement (which essentially pays for the cost of the box) on the borrowed box had been met by the previous owner. I doubt it would work for a new customer, but if you can find someone's old box and dish and do the install yourself, you might be able to get around it.

you are in the exact same boat I am in.... I mean exact because I get my cable, roadrunner, and phone through time warner. This is what we are doing, and it is the best way to do it for the least amount of money for us. We are not gonna get rid of Time Warner.

Get the dish in one room with the family package which is only 29.99 per month. if you can afford an extra $30 a month, then you would satisfy your year agreement. It would cost the same if not more to try and replace the cable part of time warner with directv for all the rooms that i have cable in, so I figure one room will have directv with the nfl ticket.

I'm in the same boat.

So what are you doing about your ISP, if you're getting rid of Roadrunner?

I had directv several years ago... though I don't believe I had to keep it for a year.. I still have my box.. somewhere.. what did you do to have them check to see if the contract for the year was fulfilled? or did you just tell them that it was? I'm sure they had a way to check those records.. Its been a good 5 years or so since I had the service

If your strapped for cash, do what I did for many years before DTV Sunday Ticket, go to a sports bar and watch it for free. I used to go to a couple of them and there always Cowboys fans everywhere, it was a blast!! I am sure it still is, nothing like walking into a bar at 10am and leaving around 4pm.........West Coast time that is.

ps....its not really free, but sports bars have a good deal as far as food during football season

I have been miserable since I moved from Austin where I could see Cowboys games anytime...I decided to buy a Slingbox and install it in my brother's spare bedroom in Austin so that I can watch Cowboys games on my PC whenever I don't get them here in Houston. I will then hook my PC up to my TV so I can watch it on the big screen.

I tried to get Sunday Ticket and Direct TV, but I am locked into a contract with DishNetwork currently.

I'm not sure how it is near you guys, but I was also a slave to Time Warner but just recently broke out.

I got Verizon DSL which to my suprise is just as fast as cable (My cable connection was weak because of the area I live in) and unlimited phone service for $65.00 a month.
