DirecTV OnDemand - Beta

I upgraded my DTV service a couple of months ago...and I got a new HD DVR. I believe it HR 21 or something. Anyway, with this new receiver you can now get movies on demand. It's a beta feature and it's only available if your DVR is connected to the Internet.

I've got to now find a long enough network cable that'll reach my router in my office so I can see how it works. I'm excited by the prospect.

There are literally hundreds if not thousands of things to watch.

Some you have to pay for but many, many are free.

On demand was really the only thing Cable had over DirecTV but now that's even gone.

Well, from what I understand if you get the HD DVR with a specific receiver HR 20 and/or 21, then DTV OnDemand is available if you connect to the internet.

According to CC, there's a combination of free and ppv, but mostly free. The ad on the TV stated they had approximately 3000 movies available. Since I haven't hooked it up yet, CC can tell you whether HBO on demand is available.

You should buy a stand alone DVD recorder like I did a few years back and burn everything you want to keep but don't have DVR space for it. That way if they do take it off on the 27th you still get to keep it and it only cost $.25 for the DVD.

Plug a network cable into the router and then to the receiver. At least that's how I read it. I don't think you can use a wireless signal.

Anyway, thanks for the info CC and Duane. I'm definitely getting a cable this weekend so I can watch some movies.

Yep it seems it does not support usb wireless devices which is a bummer.

I would need a 200 foot ethernet cable to run through my attic and across my house and down to the receiver from where my router is.

Oh well. I guess I cant watch charmed re-runs or law & Order!! oh wait, that is what is on all day anyway with tnt.

Yes you can use wireless that how my wife hooked it up. We have no long ethernet cable...it's all wireless

We have our router upstairs in our office and I can't remember how she did it because it's been a few months since she hooked it up(she knew this was going to be available at some point...plus just recently DirecTV updated the software so now all of our music and all of our pictures from our computer can be accessed now from our DVR...That's real nice...seeing all your vacation pics on a Big screen TV while listening to all of your favorite music) but there is a router antenna?(it's small) or something like that behind the DVR and THAT one is hook up by either ethernet or USB I can't remember...to the DVR.

I'll have to ask my wife...she's the one that works in IT and knows how to do all this stuff...I don't.

I've already tried to call her at work but she's not answering...I'll keep at it...because I know you don't have to run a long line...BUT you may have to buy whatever the thing was that's behind our DVR.

She bought it so I don't know how much it costs.

And while it may not save you money compared to the cable...it will save you the aggravation of running the cable or trying to hide it...so that's something.

Anyway...I keep trying to get a hold of her.

Yes cc, we need to buy wireless ethernet adapters.

It just cant be usb, the usb input on the dish is not active.

If it is worth it I will find one on sale at some point.

So I looked it up. Are you referring to the powerline ethernet adapter?

I saw it on a couple of sites and it seems like a great thing to have. The problem I see is that I keep reading that you have to buy two. One for the 'puter with the router and one for where you want to plug it in.

What I am saying is the wireless adapter for the dvr has to be connected with an ethernet cable from the adapter to the dvr. Normally wireless adapters are just a usb connection.

I have a router and my modem in my back room, my pc in the living room is wireless through a wireless g adapter. That is the normal way, the dvr just cant use the usb input.

So for everyone with a router we need to get a wireless adapter that does not utilize the usb.
