-- Those of you who like to handicap positions should put Doug Free ahead of Jermey Parnell at right tackle -- today. That's not to say that Free will retain the staring spot throughout the season, but at this point he's far ahead of Parnell in mastering the nuances of the zone blocking scheme.
Compare the lessons to ballroom dancing, where you have to master steps, proper alignment with your partner, where to place your hands, and how to lead and turn that partner. (Only here, your partner is a 300 pound end, instead of a lithe woman.)
Free has the dance down. He's now working on smoothing out his technique, on gliding though the dance, on timing his turns precisely. Parnell's brain is still at his feet It's still left-right-left-turn, for him. You can see him thinking his moves through, and this is slowing him down. He's getting extensive "dance lessons" from Frank Pollack on nearly every rep. That Irvin Berlin header in yesterday's piece wasn't flippant. Pollack sets Pollack up as the DE and gets his head into Parnell's shoulder, exactly where they would be on a real running play.
To his credit, Free is giving Parnell similar lessons. Parnell doesn't seem far, but he's lagging in the RT competition. For the moment.
