Discipline

The NFL is so uneven. Lamb bounces on his butt all alone in the endzone- 15 yard penalty.

Somebody recovers a fumble and seventeen teammates gather in the endzone and orchestrate a group dance, photo, or game of hopscotch to rub it in- perfectly OK! Just having fun!
They should require that that when the defense goes into the endzone group dance that they form a human pyramid and exit it conga line style

The OPI was ridiculous.

One, by the letter of the law, the ball has to be in the air when the downfield contact is made. From watching the replay, it appears that the contact is a solid 2 full seconds before the ball is thrown.

Two, that kind of contact happens ALL THE TIME and shouldn't be called anything.

It wasn't a poorly officiated game, but this one was a BAD call.

...the offense penalty on Pickens was BS.

Then again, NYG had roughing passer on Dak.

Which looked like ah c'mon.

So it evened out.

Aside from the penalties, I thought they played with a little bit more discipline against the run. The pass defense did not look disciplined at all. The secondary looked confused about what they were supposed to be doing. There is always hope!

This is not OPI. The defender puts his hand up and extends his arms before Pickens got there. Pickens never fully extended his arms. If you notice, the defender cuts inside of Pickens as Pickens makes his fake to the inside. If anything, this could have been illegal contact beyond 5 yards.

If the defender stood his ground and Pickens ran into him I could see the call, but that is not what happened. Bad call by the refs.

We had 12 penalties for 106 yards today - that’s a ton. Week 1 was great. Today was not
So that number is pretty misleading in this particular game.

Three were not really penalties: two intentional delays of game on 4th down before punting, and failing to get set before time ran out on the last play of the first half.
Four were on kickoffs and punts, which don't really make the same impression because they happen all the time.
One was a false start on 3rd-and-11 in field goal range, probably didn't make any difference.
One was the CeeDee taunting that was offsetting.

The only really consequential ones were one DPI, one OPI, and one hold.

From a discipline standpoint, there were no false starts (except the one mentioned above), only one holding penalty, one illegal shift (declined anyway because the pass was incomplete), and no offsides or encroachment. So there were almost none of the unforced errors, especially presnap penalties) that kill drives and just make everything look sloppy. Which felt like a significant improvement.

Special teams are a mess though, with the exception of Aubrey.

This isn’t how it works. You can make whatever excuses you want for the penalties. Just dismissing every ST return penalty as if they’re meaningless alone tells me that you aren’t judging this topic correctly. Those are big penalties

I think a change of possession or a score for gives them more time to get away with stupidity.

Oh I agree. But the team isn't a monolith.
Special teams is a problem.
The offense, on the other hand, looks more disciplined than it has in a long time, and that's reflected in part by the lack of pre-snap penalties so far this season.
Similarly, the defense isn't jumping offside or committing those kinds of discipline-related mistakes. They're just getting beat and committing getting-beat penalties.

But it's certainly true that you should ignore intentional delays of game when using penalty counts to make an argument.

True but by the letter of the law, they made contact with Dak's head or landed on him with body weight, depending on which roughing penalty is being discussed.

The OPI on Pickens is something that is more subjective and is almost never called. And they decided to throw the flag at a crucial point in the game; at a time most officials just let players play.

Fair points. These I can agree with
