Divisional Alignment

Football starved, I was just perusing through CBS Sports selection of online articles when I found the following useful tool: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/teams.

If you are unable to visit the link, in short it is a display of the United States with all the various teams logo's placed over their corresponding city. Not that this is the first time I've wondered this, but why are the Cowboy's a part of the NFCE? Wouldn't it make more sense if they were a part of the NFCW. Furthermore, wouldn't it make more sense that the Rams be a part of the NFCE, considering that they are further East and closer to the other NFCE team's?

Imagine that for just a moment. Our interdivisional foes would be the Cardinals, 49ers, and Seahawks. If only...

Considering that the 49ers and Cardianls are already considered rivals by many, it's not like TV ratings on games would hurt too much as a result. Can anybody lend perspective on this obvious misalignment? Where would one begin in petitioning such a change? Would you be in favor of the change or are you happy with the way things are now? Just curious...

Its because there used to not be as many teams so the cowboys were in the east. Now it would be horrible to change the divisions, think of all the history between the different teams. I love playing our division rivals because i hate them.

if you want to go by regions cowboys should be in the NFC South with Tampa, NO, and Atlanta now that would be a conference. WE WOULD DOMINATE......

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.

Put Carolina in the East and us in the South.

We would lose all the rivalry games from the NFCE though, so I really don't think the NFL would even consider it.

I guess my biggest complaint is I feel our current interdivisional foes have a slight advantage being that they are more accustomed to their perspective climate than our Cowboy's. Whereas, our climate, for the exception of the rare football games falling on sweltering hot days, weather is more amicable to any football player, regardless of the climate they are used to. As for the "hot days", every player, including those on the Cowboy's, suffer.

I remember seeing this argument before. As I hear it, the Giants, Commanders, and Eagles all have expressed that they want the Cowboys to remain in the East, or maybe it was just the Commanders....

anyways, not sure if we draw tv, money, and fame to those teams pocketbook when we play them or just for the sake of keeping the rivalry, but Cowboys will never leave the NFC East. Too much history.

I get that, but, at least, as a part of the NFCW, there would still be a few of our historical rivals. Granted, since Free Agency, there is really no such thing as a rivalry, but the move would be easier to swallow for those fans who cling to that type of thing.

Pressure creates diamonds.

As a Cowboy fan I'm sure you agree that anything short of a SB Championship is not good enough.

We have no interest or benefit in playing in a weak division simply to ring up a hollow 11 or 12 win season only to be dismantled in the postseason by a tested tough true contender.

In most years, if you win the East you're good enough to win the whole thing.

BTW- Playing in the NFC East all these years with the exposure to the NE part of the country is the #2 reason we are America's team.

Of course the #1 reason is that we've simply been the most successful NFL team since our 1960 inception.

I get what your saying. But that is by no means the standard for getting to the Super Bowl. Beside's, this isn't really about moving to an easier division; though, at the moment that would be the case, eventually the strength of division could switch to the NFCW. This is more about that abovementioned disadvantage the Cowboy's are at as a result of the difference in weather.

Just based off the fan turnout at Oxnard last year, I'd speculate that the Cowboy's have more fans on the West Coast than they do on the Northeast Coast, though I have no way of proving that.

The 3 least money making franchises should be put in a division with us every 10 years.

That way we would bring up revenue for those teams (due to their sold out games and TV revenue) and bring interests to those teams as well.

This would actually help the league.

We would call call it the Stimulus Division.

:D

I like it. In fact, it might be a good idea if the divisions changed every year based off that concept. For each conference, the 4 teams that yield the largest profit, should be placed with the teams that earned the lowest income from the previous year. It's just crazy enough to work...

I remember reading something about this when they re-aligned the divisions, and the commissioner, the NFL, whoever made the call, stated that they didn't want to break up some of the best rivalries in the NFL which is why the Cowboys remained in the NFCE.

I was just joking ..... but it would probably work.

I say give the teams 5-10 years in a division ..... then hold a "Division Draft"

:lmao: Just what this "MTV reality show" generation would enjoy.

Teams could go through contest to see who could be in the same division as the Cowboys, Packers, and Steelers (cant think of any other team who would apply)

I did pick up on the joking aspect of your contribution. But if you think about it, there, at least, wouldn't be a situation where one team is at a disadvantage versus every other team in the league.

I think the San Antonio Spurs have pretty much blown the theory that small franchises cannot compete with giant ones.

But I do get your point.

I like the NFC East just the way it is and glad the Cowboys are part of it. I'm not looking for an easy road to the playoffs I like knowing if you got there you had to work to get it.

I'm not looking for an easy road, either. For all we know, years from now the NFCW could be the premier division of the conference. This is about the difference in weather and how it impact's the game and how a team approaches a game. I, personally, don't think it's all that fair that the Eagles, Giants, and Commanders experience relatively the same weather at each of their games, whereas, the Cowboy's game's (when playing away) experience a huge change. And I don't buy the idea that the Commanders, Giants and Eagles are also at a disadvantage, because there are few games where the heat becomes that much of a factor for one team over another. This will be especially true now that the Cowboy's play in a dome.
