And drafting well, coaching well, and allocating resources smartly and shrewdly. Having a GM doesn’t hurt either (just a blanket statement not a reference to any team in particular reality).

The draft works a lot better than free agency. You usually end up overpaying in free agency for someone who doesn’t play as well for you as they did their original team. Once some of these guys get paid they lose motivation.
