Quinn has been playing about 70% of snaps at RDE. DLaw played about 70% last year.

They prefer the starting DTs to play about 65% or less of the snaps.

Quinn 70%
DLaw 70%
Hyder 20%

Bennett DE 40%
Bennett DT 25%

Collins 65%
Woods 60%
Covington 40%
Hill 10%

The other option is Armstrong at DE and Hyder at DT.

Giving Bennett 65% of snaps should make him happy. He played 69% last year.

Make sure Marinelli gets the memo. Bump this at seasons end with the actual numbers.

You probably see Bennett at DT more with Armstrong, Hyder at DE. All depends how they choose to rotate guys.

The Pats are playing more 3-4 now and other LB focused packages, but in general I noticed they limit the percent of snaps by their DLinemen as compared to the Cowboys.

If Bennett plays well, they Cowboys could stand to limit DLaw, Collins and Quinn to the 65% range.

Jets Game (week 6):

Our secondary rotation of guys hasn't been very effective. Bennett helps give us a deeper rotation so hopefully our second wave of guys can start making plays.

Nice post.

Only adjustment I'd make is that we'll probably see Collins get some 1 tech snaps on obvious passing downs. That will likely increase Hyder's snaps inside.

Tilt Bennett toward DT. Bennett and Collins should be our starting nickel DTs.

That's where we need him. Pass rush at DT.

They have been playing Collins more like 75%. We just don't have a lot at pass rushing DT. Still don't.

Assuming 50/50 Base/Nickel

Base DT
RDT Collins 25%/Covington 25%
LDT Woods 50%
Nickel DT
RDT Bennett 50%
LDT Collins 50%

Tweak that at the margins to get guys rest and get Hill some snaps, and deal with trying to get more balanced run/pass defense.

Yes, Bennett should help the rotation.

A.Woods getting injured in game 2 and missing games 3, 4 and 5 put a strain on the rotation.
Jerry Jones never heard that General Lee surrendered at Appomattox...:muttley:

Great thread. I’m also wondering where these snaps are going to come from.

I think that Bennett plays all the DT snaps in obvious passing situations. I don’t think people understand just how good he has been in that spot. He has just destroyed offensive guards in his career - including our own Zack Martin, by the way.

Here’s a crazy stat - Dak Prescott has taken more hits from Michael Bennett than any other player in his career.

However against the run, he’s much more effective from the DE spot.

There’s about 75 snaps per game, and since it’s a passing league, about 45 of those are passes.

I think that we can get Bennett up to 70% of the snaps by having him at DT next to Collins on second and long and all third downs, and then rotating about a third of the snaps at DE with Tank and Quinn.

Well, unfortunately one consequence of the Bennett acquisition is that I believe Hill is effectively done for the year. I don’t see him being active again for the rest of 2019. There’s just not a spot for him on the game day roster.

While I'm not always in 100% agreement with you, it's not often I don't agree with you.

I do appreciate the time and effort you put into this board, sometimes we forget to thank the folks who do so.

Keep up the good work!

You've got a point there. If everyone is healthy, Hill won't suit up. Not much different than the season so far.

The main problem for Hill is that he just isn't that good. At least yet. Broadus was talking that he simply lacked the power. We're not going to play him unless injuries come. But they will. We've got 4 DTs ahead of him, including Bennett as a tweener. Some of those will miss games, and Hill will play in those games.

They'd love to play Hill. Covington has produced, but our rotation would be much better off with another balanced run/pass DT.

Only thing: give Hyder, Hill's 10% snaps at 3Tech. Let Hill get to be really good friends with the strength n conditioning Coach.. like a college redshirt.

That's best for him. He needs a redshirt year to gain strength and learn. Let's see how he looks next season. Hopefully, he shows improvement. If he does, he'll be a load at DT for us.

I think Bennett can help improve the DL overall performance, but at this point in his career, I have low expectations on him being an impact type player who will make loads of big plays. His value now will probably be just to be steady not spectacular. If we get even a slight improvement over what we were getting from Crawford, the trade was worth it.

If everybody is healthy, it's between Hill and Armstrong to the the 8th active DL.

They always have 8 DL active.

The 8th DL usually plays some amount of snaps.

If everybody is healthy, it's between Hill and Armstrong to the the 8th active DL.

Let's make it simple.

Assume 60% total for Bennett with 30% DE and 30% DT.

The top 2 DEs, top 3 DTs plus Bennett:
DE
DLaw ............... 70%
Quinn ............... 70%
Bennett ............ 30%
Sub Total ........ 170.00%

DT
Collins ............. 60%
Woods ............. 60%
Covington ........ 30%
Bennett ............ 30%
DT Snaps ........ 180%

Then either Armstrong (DE) or Hill (DT) will be the 8th DL and Hyder plays DE/DT snaps based on which one.

Giving the 8th DL 20% of snaps leaves 30% total for Hyder.

With Armstrong Active:
DE
Armstrong ..... 20%
Hyder ............ 10%
Total ................. 30%

DT
Hill ............ 0%
Hyder ....... 20%
Total ............ 20%

With Hill Active:
DE

Armstrong ..... 0%
Hyder ............ 30%
Total ................. 30%

DT
Hill ............ 0%
Hyder ....... 20%
Total ............ 20%
