Well, we ran this under Phillips and Ryan. Not a lot though. We also ran some really strange fronts as well. I'm not sure about last year as I didn't look at the games much. But teams are running a true 5 man DL but it is generally a pass rushing LB who is more often up than down. So it isn't that big a deal as you're moving a LB out of the 4-3 to the DL. However, it is the personnel running it that is important.
Teams are using a Joker/Leo/terminology of the week as well and they can be on the line. Really that is just a movement of a LB inside the DE etc.
I believe I saw them run a 3-1 front last year but I'm not certain. Just another way to run a prevent and something I wouldn't use much.
There is just so much hybridization of defenses now.
You know..
maybe you or somebody else knows the answer to this..
just curious..
Like we have heard for years about the Ol' Bill Walsh philosophy on offense about scripting the first 15 plays or so to get read on the defensive tendencies to exploit late in games..
Does Marrinelli do anything on defense that forces the offense to adjust out of that?
Does he or is it possible to shuffle the defenses so that the offense has to stop what it is doing?
I mean, Payton Manning and Eli have won SBs doing that by changing the plays at the LOS constantly
and we all know Romo does it big, too.
But can it be done defensively, too?
Of course it would take picking the right guys at MLB and the SS positions..
but that is sort of what John Lynch did for TB and Chicago from his position on defense.
Maybe Byron is that guy.
