With this week's release of running back Christine Michael, Rod Smith is the likely backup to Cowboys starter Darren McFadden. Here are a few things to know about Smith.

1. Smith wears No. 45.

To say that 45 has not been a well-known number for Cowboys players over the years is probably an understatement. The most recent player to wear No. 45 was fullback Shaun Chapas in 2011. The three most recognizable Cowboys to wear the number are probably running back L.G. Dupre (1960-61), safety Richmond Flowers (1969-71) and CB Manny Hendrix (1986-91).

2. Slew of Seattle players

Smith is 6-3, 226 pounds and is the third former Seattle running back the Cowboys have signed this season. Dallas signed Robert Turbin, a former Seahawks back who was with Cleveland, on Wednesday, a day after the team released ex-Seahawk Christine Michael, a former Texas A&M star.

3. Born a Hoosier

Rod Smith, who is 23, was born Jan. 10, 1992 in Fort Wayne, Ind. Smith played high school ball at Fort Wayne Harding and collegiately at Ohio State. He signed as an undrafted free agent with the Seahawks in 2015 but was released by Seattle after playing in only one game.

CowboysZone ULTIMATE Fan
I remember watching him and kept wondering why he didn't get more chances. But as a Freshman and all the good players in front of you, how many chances can one get.
But I liked what I seen when he was on the field.

I believe he had continued academic issues which is the reason he was finally dismissed.
Maybe it was a maturity issue, family issues, struggling as many students do. Could been another failed drug test. Who really knows.

Anyway, being a Buckeyes fan I am pulling for him to stick with the Cowboys and make a contribution.

Did see him flanked out as a receiver on one play so he must have some skills there. Either that or it was John Lynch incorrectly identifying players again...

I felt the same way as a Buckeyes fan he was a huge disappointment. Fumbling, some attitude problems, never panned out at OSU but hopefully he takes advantage of this opportunity.

I counted three times the play by play guy in the Tampa Game said McFadden with a carry when it was Michael.

Same here. I kept looking at the number and wondering how is the announcer doing that ???

That was one really bad broadcasting crew. After the Bucs scored the TD and we get the ball, they went into this conversation about how great Dan Bailey was and that we just needed to get him a reasonable chance...as if a Fg would do anything. It went on for a reasonable amount of time and then it just kind of tailed off as they realized a FG was not gonna win the game.
