Anthony Spencer, Cowboys' senior DL, has gone from indispensible player to spare part with cloudy future

IRVING — This season, Anthony Spencer has been cast as the most senior member of the Cowboys’ defensive line. It’s a role he’s well-suited for after unwittingly assuming the identity of his hoary character. He has a soft voice and long beard marked with gray flecks. He also recently spent approximately five months virtually immobilized, unable to move around without the aid of crutches.

“I laid down for about 16, 17 hours every day,” Spencer said.

Such is life for a 30-year-old NFL defensive end recovering from microfracture surgery in his left knee. The procedure, performed in October after Spencer played only one game last season, has usually spelled the end of athletes’ careers. Former Denver running back Terrell Davis and NBA star Tracy McGrady were never the same after undergoing the same type of operation.

It’s also far from certain whether Spencer will ever regain the form he showed in 2012, when he collected a career-high 11 sacks and was invited to his first Pro Bowl.

This is why the franchise tag pays players so well. We were lucky to go from G.Ellis to him without a big drop off or search on that side of the line, now we just gotta do the same thing on both ends of the line:eek:

terrific for you (seriously, not busting your chops)...but, I assume that your profession doesn't require you slamming into 300+ lb behemoths on a daily basis?

No. But at the time I was playing about 3 hours of basketball everyday and working at a package delivery service slinging 5000 plus lbs containers of packages around.
Maybe it's because I was younger than him. Maybe I had less cartridge damage, although I did it working at a package delivery business and it was termed severe and I was diagnosed as having a permanent disability, I never really had a problem. After the surgery most of the pain was gone I had before the surgery. I guess that's why it's hard for me to believe Spencer and some of the others mentioned experienced that and of a setback.
I was back playing basketball and working in less than 2 months.

I have got to believe that he is still having issues or he would be suiting up already in some capacity...I personally like what they have done with his contract...the team really can't lose out in this...if he is on the pup to start the season (likely), then his salary is already greatly reduced, and none of it is guaranteed...but, if he is able to come back at some point, then the team can benefit from it later in the season which would help to reduce looking around for guys if we get slammed with the injury bug again

I can't call the situation a "win-win", but I can call it a "not-lose, not-lose"

Probably nowhere near the injury spencer is recovering from. Spencer couldn't wipe his own *** after 2 months post-surgery.

After all the money Jerry has paid him the last 2 years, spencer owes us a productive year for next to nothing in salary.

After reading he had to lay down 18 hours a day, I kinda feel sorry for him. He would've had a long, fruitful career.

WOW you can sling around 5000 pounds? Looks like you would need a fork lift.
