'07 seventh-rounders shine in secondary

Alan Ball and Courtney Brown, the defensive backs the Cowboys drafted in the 2007 seventh round, haven't made much of an impact the last two seasons.

That could change if they can keep performing like they did during today's OTA workout. Granted, the Cowboys aren't even wearing shoulder pads, but the coaches are encouraged by what they've seen out of Ball and Brown this spring.

Ball, solely a cornerback the last two seasons, is working primarily at safety. Brown, a college cornerback the Cowboys converted to a safety, is working primarily at corner. The idea is to create depth in the secondary by having backups -- rookie fifth-rounder DeAngelo Smith is also working at both spots -- who can play multiple positions.

But Ball and Brown might be convincing the coaches that they been playing their second-best positions the last two years.

Ball, who filled in for Ken Hamlin (absent due to personal reasons) as the first-team free safety, has displayed good instincts back there. He had a pick on a classic tip drill play and is often around the ball.

Can Ball hold up against the run as a 6-1, 186-pound safety? Wade Phillips thinks so.

"He's such a competitor," Phillips said. "He is a good tackler. He's going to give it everything he's got. We'll see what he has. I've had smaller guys that have played safety before. Not many of them can do it, but I think he's one that can."

Brown (6-1, 204) was too hesitant to be effective as a safety. But he's a phenomenal athlete with top-of-the-chart measurables (4.32 40, 41.5-inch vertical in pre-draft workout) for a corner.

When the Cowboys originally made Brown a safety, there was talk that he didn't have the fluid hips necessary to play corner in the NFL. That wasn't evident today, when he had a pair of spectacular pass breakups. One was an out on which he flashed closing speed to deflect a Tony Romo rope to Kevin Ogletree. The other came on a Roy Williams go route down the left sideline, with Brown running stride for stride in press-man coverage with Williams and swatting the ball away with his left hand.

"There is a difference in the physicality between cornerback and safety," Phillips said. "We put him as a cornerback playing safety last year, and that hurt him some as far as being physical, although he's still working at that. But at cornerback, if he can cover like he covered today, he may have a home out there."

We're going to cut more good players this year than we have in a long time.

I love it. I like that the coaches are moving these guys around, and I'm glad they're flashing a little bit. I liked both of those picks when they were made.

As a side note, I think Pat Watkins is in for a tough time this year...

How many DBs can you keep on the roster? 10? Even then, you're cutting a couple of guys who can play in this league.

They are playing better because they seen those other DBs get drafted and they are scared.

IMO that is a good thing.

Let the best players win their spots.

we have alot of talent in the secondary

Alan Ball may be the least physically gifted guy, and he's a heck of an athlete in his own right

Most here knew it would take 2-3 years for Brown to gell if at all. He came from such poor competition. But I'll wait until everyone puts pads on before getting all warm and fuzzy.

I am curious as to which coach evaluated Ball and Brown last season? The lack fo fluid hips remark especially.

Anyone who knew anything about these players would have known that they were playing out of position. Ball was a physical but undersized corner who lacked NFL level athleticism to play outside. Brown was a big uber-athletic playmaking corner who lacked physicality against the run.

Is it that the defensive backs are playing better, and that we have more depth... or that the receiving corps is much worse than last year?

I think Ball would be a heck of a FS judging by the way he plays gunner. Like the coach said, he's tough and feisty and more than willing to mix it up. Pat Watkins has to be a goner.

Yes, I know Wade repeated this to the media, but I am sure Wade was not the one who made that initial evaluation. That is almost always made by a position coach. In this case it would either be Maxie or Campo.

And what happended to "Jerry"? :D

Watkins is just as feisty and willing to mix it up IMO, he's just brittle b/c he's light in the pants AND has amazingly bad tackling form. Ball is just as small (for his size) as Watkins (and Watkins has been the better STer so far), just saying.

How many times have we heard that. We have enough talent to win, we have no, none, zippo, zilch in terms of leadership. Until we get that from both players and coaches, we will not win.
